How much do dfma jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 17, 2026, the average hourly pay for dfma in the United States is $26.34, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $15.14 and $30.77 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by DFMA engineers when collaborating with cross-functional teams?

DFMA (Design for Manufacturability and Assembly) engineers often work closely with design, production, and quality teams to optimize product designs for efficient manufacturing and assembly. A common challenge is balancing innovative design ideas with practical manufacturing constraints, which requires effective communication and compromise. DFMA engineers may also encounter resistance to design changes from other departments or need to address cost concerns while maintaining product quality. Strong collaboration skills and a solutions-oriented mindset are key to overcoming these challenges and ensuring project success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DFMA (Design for Manufacturability and Assembly) Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DFMA Engineer, you need a solid background in mechanical engineering or a related field, along with expertise in manufacturing processes and product design principles. Proficiency in CAD software, DFMA analysis tools like Boothroyd Dewhurst, and knowledge of industry standards are commonly required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and a collaborative mindset help you work across design and production teams. These skills and qualities ensure products are designed efficiently for cost-effective, high-quality manufacturing and assembly.

What is DFMA?

DFMA stands for Design for Manufacturability and Assembly. It is a set of engineering principles and methodologies aimed at designing products in such a way that they are easier, more cost-effective, and more efficient to manufacture and assemble. By considering manufacturing and assembly issues early in the design process, companies can reduce production costs, improve quality, and speed up time to market. DFMA helps identify potential problems before they occur in production, enabling better collaboration between design and manufacturing teams.

What is the difference between Dfma vs Manufacturing Engineer?

AspectDfmaManufacturing Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires engineering degree, knowledge of design and manufacturing processesRequires engineering degree, expertise in production, process optimization
Work EnvironmentDesign-focused, collaborative with design and manufacturing teamsProduction floor, process improvement, project management
Industry UsageUsed in product design, development, and manufacturing planningInvolved in manufacturing process setup, troubleshooting, and efficiency

While Dfma (Design for Manufacturing and Assembly) focuses on designing products for ease of manufacturing, Manufacturing Engineers implement and optimize manufacturing processes. Both roles require engineering knowledge and collaborate closely, but Dfma emphasizes design considerations, whereas Manufacturing Engineers focus on production execution and process improvements.

Our team solves tough, meaningful problems that create a safer, more secure world.

The Producibility and Prototyping Center strives to develop, mature, and deploy advanced product development capabilities across the Hardware Engineering discipline, enabling the business to deliver high quality work products at competitive discriminating velocity and cost.

The Critical Item Producibility Readiness Department is seeking a Senior Producibility Engineer.

This is an onsite position based in Tucson, Arizona.

The Producibility and Dimensional Management Section works directly with Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Processes, Design and Drafting teams, Operations, Quality Supply Chain, and key suppliers, to implement mechanical producibility improvements on new and emerging programs as well as upgrades to existing programs.

The team executes tolerance optimization through one-dimensional and three-dimensional tolerance analysis modeling and works with the design team to influence the final design.  Early engagement in the conceptual stage and throughout the development process ensures that our designs are optimized with respect to methods of manufacture.

What You Will Do

  • Work with the hardware design team to influence design producibility.

  • Perform producibility assessments and lead Design for Manufacturing & Assembly (DFMA) engagements to drive cost out of the design.

  • Leverage CAD tools such as DFM-Pro to analyze and optimize designs.

  • Track DFMA engagements completed by the discipline, and review for completeness and applicability.

  • Manage product cost reduction initiatives towards a product cost target

  • Perform and review one-dimensional tolerance analyses.

  • Assess suppliers for their capability and readiness and offer support to ensure success in meeting contractual deliveries.

  • Engage with program design teams, communicate analysis results, and negotiate design modifications.

  • Occasional travel will be required to support supplier activities and collaborate with department/directorate peers.

Qualifications You Must Have

  • Bachelors in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) Degree and a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.

  • Experience with detailed knowledge of one manufacturing process such as machining, casting, welding, forging, injection mold, etc.

  • Experience with Design for Manufacturing and/or Assembly workshops.

  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required.

Qualifications We Prefer

  • Certified Design for Manufacturing & Assembly (DFMA) Lead.

  • ASME Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing Professional Certification

  • Experience performing two or three-dimensional tolerance analyses.

  • Exposure and or basic understanding of more than one of the following standard manufacturing processes such as: multi axis machining, sheet metal fabrication, casting, 3-D printing, welding, precision mechanical assembly, and mechanical inspection processes

What We Offer

  • Our values drive our actions, behaviors, and performance with a vision for a safer, more connected world. At RTX we value: Trust, Respect, Accountability, Collaboration, and Innovation
