What are Dexa Techs?

Dexa Techs, also known as DEXA Technologists or Bone Densitometry Technicians, are healthcare professionals who operate dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) machines to measure bone mineral density. They play a crucial role in diagnosing conditions like osteoporosis by performing scans and ensuring patient safety during the procedure. Dexa Techs also maintain equipment, prepare patients for exams, and sometimes assist with basic data analysis for physicians. Their expertise helps doctors assess bone health and determine appropriate treatment plans.

How much does a DEXA tech make?

A DEXA technician's average salary varies by location and experience, but typically ranges from $50,000 to $70,000 annually. Certification in radiologic technology and familiarity with DEXA scanning equipment can influence earning potential.

How to become a dexa scan tech?

To become a DEXA scan technician, you typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, followed by specialized training or certification in DEXA scanning and radiologic technology. Certification from organizations like the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) can enhance job prospects, and technical skills in operating imaging equipment are essential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Dexa Tech, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Dexa Tech (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry Technician), you need a background in radiologic technology, typically with an associate degree or certificate and relevant state licensure or ARRT certification. Familiarity with DEXA scanning equipment, imaging software, and radiation safety protocols is essential. Attention to detail, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to reassure patients are important soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure accurate bone density measurements, patient comfort, and compliance with safety standards in diagnostic healthcare settings.

What is the highest paid medical tech job?

In the medical technology field, roles such as radiology managers, nuclear medicine technologists, and specialized imaging directors tend to have the highest salaries. These positions often require advanced certifications, extensive experience, and expertise in imaging equipment like MRI or CT scanners, and they can earn six-figure incomes depending on the setting and location.

What does a dexa technician do?

A DEXA technician operates dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scanners to measure bone density and body composition. They prepare patients, position them correctly, and ensure accurate scan procedures while following safety protocols and maintaining equipment. Certification and attention to detail are important in this role.
