What is a DevOps specialist?

DevOps Specialists are IT professionals who bridge the gap between software development and operations teams to streamline the software delivery process. They use automation, continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) tools, and infrastructure management practices to ensure that software is built, tested, and released efficiently and reliably. Their responsibilities often include managing cloud infrastructure, automating workflows, monitoring system performance, and collaborating closely with both developers and IT staff. DevOps Specialists play a key role in improving collaboration, reducing deployment times, and increasing system reliability within organizations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DevOps specialist?

To thrive as a DevOps Specialist, you need a strong background in software development, system administration, and automation, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, Git, and cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure, as well as certifications like AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, is commonly expected. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and a collaborative mindset help DevOps Specialists bridge gaps between development and operations teams. These competencies are vital for streamlining workflows, ensuring continuous integration and delivery, and maintaining reliable system performance.

What are some common challenges a DevOps specialist faces during the integration of new tools or workflows?

DevOps Specialists often encounter challenges such as resistance to change from team members, ensuring seamless integration across diverse systems, and maintaining security while implementing automation. Adapting existing infrastructure to new tools can require significant troubleshooting and collaboration with developers, QA, and IT teams. Continuous learning and effective communication are key to overcoming these hurdles and driving successful DevOps adoption.

What is the difference between Devops Specialist vs Cloud Engineer?

While both roles involve cloud technologies and certifications, a Devops Specialist primarily focuses on automation, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure management, whereas a Cloud Engineer concentrates on designing and deploying cloud infrastructure. The roles often overlap but serve different core functions within IT teams.

Is a DevOps Specialist an entry level role?

A DevOps Specialist is typically a mid- to senior-level role that requires experience with automation, cloud platforms, and tools like Jenkins or Docker. Entry-level positions in DevOps usually focus on supporting roles or internships, with more advanced responsibilities requiring several years of experience.

Job description

* We’re supporting a high-visibility enterprise client undergoing a major AI transformation initiative focused on modernizing how internal teams build, deploy, and scale work across engineering and operations. This organization is investing heavily in AI acceleration, workflow automation, and development lifecycle optimization to improve speed, governance, and long-term operational efficiency.

They are seeking a senior-level DevOps Specialist who thrives at the intersection of infrastructure, systems thinking, and execution. This opportunity is ideal for someone who enjoys building scalable environments, improving deployment workflows, and creating operational frameworks that allow technical teams to move faster with less friction.

This opportunity is structured as a short-term consulting engagement supporting a 4-month client project, with strong potential for extension based on performance and budget. We can structure this as either W2 employment or a 1099 contract, which can be discussed further during the recruiter screen. This is a hybrid engagement requiring onsite work in Issaquah, WA three days per week. This individual must be located in the Seattle or greater Seattle area in order to accommodate the hybrid requirement; relocation is not supported.*

As an AI Enablement DevOps Specialist (Consultant) for AG Consulting Partners, a typical day might include the following:

  • Establish Dev → Test → Prod environment pipelines for scalable deployment readiness
  • Stand up Microsoft environments and support infrastructure required for implementation
  • Configure platform readiness including data inputs, environment variables, and deployment workflows
  • Set up centralized monitoring, telemetry, alerting, and operational dashboards
  • Review and document current-state SDLC processes across agile, waterfall, and hybrid delivery environments
  • Assess baseline metrics including cycle time, throughput, failure rates, and operational bottlenecks
  • Partner with Developers, Engineering Managers, TPMs, and Project Managers to identify tooling gaps and improvement opportunities
  • Support lightweight pilots to test AI tooling assumptions and implementation readiness
  • Help define governance standards for deployment policies, permissions, and operational procedures
  • Build operational handoff plans, escalation paths, and post-go-live support models
  • Support hypercare and elevated production support during rollout and stabilization phases

This job is for you if:

  • You have strong DevOps ownership instincts and know how to create structure in fast-moving environments
  • You are highly technical but can also communicate clearly with non-technical stakeholders
  • You thrive in environments where speed, clarity, and execution matter
  • You are comfortable building while also improving process, governance, and scalability
  • You know how to balance delivery speed with operational excellence and long-term maintainability
  • You move quickly, solve problems proactively, and take accountability without waiting for direction

Requirements

You have:

  • 7+ years of experience in DevOps, cloud infrastructure, platform engineering, or technical consulting
  • Strong experience building CI/CD pipelines and deployment workflows in Microsoft environments
  • Experience supporting enterprise-scale SDLC modernization initiatives
  • Strong understanding of Azure environments, DevOps tooling, governance, and release processes
  • Experience with monitoring systems, telemetry, and production support models
  • Enterprise-level FTE or consulting experience supporting large, complex organizations is required.

You might also have:

  • Experience supporting AI, Copilot, automation, or agentic workflow initiatives
  • Exposure to Power Platform, Power Automate, or enterprise AI tooling implementations
  • Experience designing governance guardrails for AI-enabled development environments
