Job description

Project Manager- Transportation Engineering Services

Monday-Friday | 7:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., hours may vary 

Do you have experience in transportation, construction, project management, or civil engineering - and enjoy seeing projects move from plans to improvements you can see throughout the community? Help manage the traffic signals, street lighting, signs, and infrastructure projects that keep Fort Wayne moving safely and efficiently.

What You'll Do

You'll support Transportation Engineering projects from planning through construction and inspection. This position works with City departments, contractors, engineers, INDOT, and other agencies to coordinate projects, review plans and permits, maintain infrastructure, and respond to community concerns.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manages larger, more complicated Civil projects to include but not limited to Consultant designed projects;
  • Develops project plans that include design, estimate, schedule, and special provisions and prepares documents for advertising, bidding, and award. Ensures contract compliance with these documents;
  • Conducts pre-bid and pre-construction meetings with contractor and other effected agencies;
  • Maintains on-call status in case of public emergencies;
  • Requests purchase and work orders for funding of street projects;
  • Manages material records and quantities constructed for invoice verification and payment;
  • Authorizes contractor payments, approves change orders, and prepares final project documentation;
  • Develops right-of-way engineering plans and assists with right-of-way documents;
  • Maintains knowledge of Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT), Federal Highway Administration (FHA), American Association of Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) rules and regulations and acts as the Cities liaison for state and federally funded Transportation projects;
  • Interacts with the public, City officials and outside agencies with patience, tact, respect, and professionalism regarding requests or complaints etc.
What You Bring: Education & Experience
  • BS in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited Civil Engineering Program and two (2) years of related Project Manager experience, or
  • BS in Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering Technology or completion of an equivalent course of study and four (4) years of related Project Manager experience, or
  • AS in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, or Construction Engineering Technology or completion of an equivalent course of study and eight (8) years of related Project Manager experience, or
  • Twelve (12) years of progressively responsible public works related engineering design experience.
Technical Skills & Knowledge
  • Transportation construction and maintenance
  • Construction drawings, project specifications, inspections, and cost estimates
  • City ordinances related to traffic, right-of-way, and permitting
  • Project and asset management systems, including PMIS and Accela
  • Microsoft Office and database/accounting software
  • Ability to analyze data, identify problems, and develop practical solutions
  • Strong ability to work with contractors, engineers, government agencies, City employees, and the public
