What exactly does a DevOps engineer do?

A DevOps engineer is responsible for automating and streamlining software development, deployment, and infrastructure management. They work with tools like CI/CD pipelines, cloud platforms, and configuration management to improve system reliability, scalability, and efficiency. The role often requires knowledge of scripting, automation, and collaboration between development and operations teams.

How do DevOps Engineers typically collaborate with development and operations teams on a daily basis?

DevOps Engineers act as a bridge between development and operations teams by automating workflows, facilitating communication, and ensuring smooth software deployments. On a daily basis, they work closely with developers to integrate code changes, manage CI/CD pipelines, and troubleshoot build or deployment issues. They also collaborate with IT operations to monitor system performance, address infrastructure concerns, and implement security best practices. This collaborative approach helps ensure rapid delivery of reliable software while minimizing downtime.

Is DevOps dead due to AI?

DevOps engineers focus on automating software development and deployment processes, and AI tools are increasingly used to enhance automation, monitoring, and decision-making. While AI changes some workflows, it complements DevOps practices rather than replacing the role entirely, and skills in scripting, cloud platforms, and CI/CD remain essential. The role continues to evolve with technological advancements, emphasizing adaptability and continuous learning.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DevOps Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DevOps Engineer, you need a solid understanding of software development, IT operations, automation, and CI/CD practices, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with tools such as Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS/Azure, and configuration management systems like Ansible or Chef is highly valued, along with relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified DevOps Engineer). Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for bridging development and operations teams. These skills and qualities are important for ensuring efficient software delivery, system reliability, and seamless collaboration across the software development lifecycle.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior-level DevOps engineers with extensive experience, specialized skills in automation, cloud platforms, and infrastructure management can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially in high-cost-of-living areas or within large organizations. Achieving this level typically requires advanced certifications, leadership roles, and a strong track record of managing complex systems at scale.

Is DevOps still in demand in 2026?

DevOps engineers continue to be in high demand due to the ongoing need for automation, continuous integration, and cloud infrastructure management. Skills in tools like Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure remain valuable for organizations seeking efficient software delivery. The role is expected to grow as companies prioritize agile development and scalable systems.

What Is a DevOps Engineer?

As a DevOps engineer, you collaborate with the IT development and operations teams to oversee the continuous integration of software applications throughout development, deployment, and infrastructure management. Your job duties include coding, scripting, testing, managing hardware and network configurations, logging, and performing health checks. You may be responsible for managing the automation processes between development and operations, and ensuring they work together for code releases. You may use a variety of DevOps tools like Nagios, Docker, and Git.

What are DevOps Engineers?

DevOps Engineers are IT professionals who bridge the gap between software development and operations. They work to automate and streamline the software delivery process by using tools and practices that enable continuous integration, continuous delivery, and quick deployment. Their responsibilities include configuring infrastructure, monitoring systems, managing CI/CD pipelines, and ensuring reliable releases. DevOps Engineers often collaborate with developers, QA, and IT staff to ensure consistent and efficient workflows. Their goal is to improve collaboration, increase deployment speed, and maintain system reliability.

Job description

Senior DevOps Engineer
Job Overview
Sr. DevOps Engineer
THE ROLE
The Senior DevOps Engineer takes the lead in shaping our cloud platform and developer enablement strategy. In this high-impact role, you'll have broad authority and autonomy to define the architecture, tools, and practices that power our cloud-hosted systems. You'll design and build modern, scalable infrastructure; establish best practices for CI/CD, observability, and security; and create the tooling that helps our developers move fast with confidence. This is a rare opportunity for a hands-on technical leader who wants to set direction, drive innovation, and make a lasting mark on how software is built and delivered.
WHAT YOU'll DO
  • Design, implement, and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) to automate provisioning, configuration, and scaling of cloud environments using tools such as Terraform, Pulumi, or Bicep.
  • Own the CI/CD strategy and toolchain, designing pipelines that enable rapid, reliable, and secure delivery of applications and infrastructure changes.
  • Establish and enforce DevOps best practices for version control, testing, deployment, and rollback across multiple environments.
  • Build and maintain reusable infrastructure modules and templates to support consistent, secure, and efficient deployments.
  • Collaborate with development teams to integrate CI/CD pipelines with application codebases, test suites, and runtime configurations.
  • Monitor, optimize, and troubleshoot pipeline performance and reliability, ensuring fast feedback loops and minimal downtime.
  • Implement observability, logging, and alerting frameworks to improve visibility into infrastructure health and deployment outcomes.
  • Champion automation and self-service, reducing manual processes and empowering developers with scalable, reliable tools.
  • Evaluate and introduce new technologies and practices to improve the security, resilience, and developer experience of the platform.
  • Provide mentorship and technical leadership, helping engineers adopt infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD practices effectively.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED TO SUCCEED
Required
  • 5+ years of experience in DevOps, Cloud Engineering, or related software infrastructure roles.
  • Proven expertise in designing and implementing Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using tools such as Terraform, Pulumi, or Bicep.
  • Strong background in CI/CD pipeline development and automation, using systems such as GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps Pipelines, Jenkins, or similar.
  • Deep understanding of cloud-native architectures, containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), and modern deployment strategies (e.g., blue/green, canary).
  • Solid grasp of networking, identity, and security principles in cloud environments.
  • Experience with monitoring, observability, and incident response practices and tooling.

Preferred
  • Hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure as the primary cloud platform.
  • Familiarity with Azure Container Apps, Azure Key Vault, and related services.
  • Strong understanding of GitHub Enterprise integrations for source control and automation.
  • Experience designing multi-environment and multi-tenant architectures in Azure.
  • Knowledge of policy-as-code and security-as-code implementations within Azure ecosystems.
  • Prior experience leading DevOps strategy or setting organizational infrastructure standards.

Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related degree preferred or 10+ years of cumulative DevOps experience
