What exactly does a DevOps engineer do?

A DevOps engineer is responsible for automating and streamlining software development, deployment, and infrastructure management. They work with tools like CI/CD pipelines, cloud platforms, and configuration management to improve system reliability, scalability, and efficiency. The role often requires knowledge of scripting, automation, and collaboration between development and operations teams.

How do DevOps Engineers typically collaborate with development and operations teams on a daily basis?

DevOps Engineers act as a bridge between development and operations teams by automating workflows, facilitating communication, and ensuring smooth software deployments. On a daily basis, they work closely with developers to integrate code changes, manage CI/CD pipelines, and troubleshoot build or deployment issues. They also collaborate with IT operations to monitor system performance, address infrastructure concerns, and implement security best practices. This collaborative approach helps ensure rapid delivery of reliable software while minimizing downtime.

Is DevOps dead due to AI?

DevOps engineers focus on automating software development and deployment processes, and AI tools are increasingly used to enhance automation, monitoring, and decision-making. While AI changes some workflows, it complements DevOps practices rather than replacing the role entirely, and skills in scripting, cloud platforms, and CI/CD remain essential. The role continues to evolve with technological advancements, emphasizing adaptability and continuous learning.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DevOps Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DevOps Engineer, you need a solid understanding of software development, IT operations, automation, and CI/CD practices, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with tools such as Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS/Azure, and configuration management systems like Ansible or Chef is highly valued, along with relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified DevOps Engineer). Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for bridging development and operations teams. These skills and qualities are important for ensuring efficient software delivery, system reliability, and seamless collaboration across the software development lifecycle.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior-level DevOps engineers with extensive experience, specialized skills in automation, cloud platforms, and infrastructure management can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially in high-cost-of-living areas or within large organizations. Achieving this level typically requires advanced certifications, leadership roles, and a strong track record of managing complex systems at scale.

Is DevOps still in demand in 2026?

DevOps engineers continue to be in high demand due to the ongoing need for automation, continuous integration, and cloud infrastructure management. Skills in tools like Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure remain valuable for organizations seeking efficient software delivery. The role is expected to grow as companies prioritize agile development and scalable systems.

What Is a DevOps Engineer?

As a DevOps engineer, you collaborate with the IT development and operations teams to oversee the continuous integration of software applications throughout development, deployment, and infrastructure management. Your job duties include coding, scripting, testing, managing hardware and network configurations, logging, and performing health checks. You may be responsible for managing the automation processes between development and operations, and ensuring they work together for code releases. You may use a variety of DevOps tools like Nagios, Docker, and Git.

What are DevOps Engineers?

DevOps Engineers are IT professionals who bridge the gap between software development and operations. They work to automate and streamline the software delivery process by using tools and practices that enable continuous integration, continuous delivery, and quick deployment. Their responsibilities include configuring infrastructure, monitoring systems, managing CI/CD pipelines, and ensuring reliable releases. DevOps Engineers often collaborate with developers, QA, and IT staff to ensure consistent and efficient workflows. Their goal is to improve collaboration, increase deployment speed, and maintain system reliability.

LOCATION: Montreal or anywhere else in Canada
WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING
We are seeking a skilled and motivated DevOps Specialist to join our Technology team. In this role, you will be a key partner to our .NET and Java development teams, responsible for building and maintaining robust CI/CD pipelines, managing cloud infrastructure primarily on AWS (with some Azure exposure), and driving a culture of automation, reliability, and operational excellence. You will work closely with developers, architects, and leadership to streamline software delivery and ensure high availability of our systems.
CI/CD & Automation
  • Design, implement, and maintain CI/CD pipelines for .NET and Java applications using Atlassian Bitbucket Pipelines, with experience in other tools such as Azure DevOps or AWS CodePipeline considered an asset
  • Automate build, test, and deployment processes to reduce lead time and manual intervention
  • Manage and improve Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform, AWS CloudFormation, or Pulumi
Cloud Infrastructure (AWS & Azure)
  • Provision, configure, patch and manage cloud resources primarily on AWS (EC2, ECS/EKS, Lambda, RDS, S3, IAM identity centre, VPC, CloudWatch, Security Hub/GuardDuty, AWS backup / snapshot strategy + restore testing) and as needed on Azure
  • Implement and enforce cloud security best practices, including IAM policies, secrets management, and network segmentation
  • Monitor infrastructure costs and identify optimization opportunities
Reliability & Observability
  • Own observability standards (golden signals, dashboards, alert hygiene) and ensure our observability platform Coralogix is delivering actionable signal—not noise.  Experience with alternative tools such as Datadog, ELK Stack, or Prometheus/Grafana is welcome
  • Experience with application performance monitoring (APM) such as AppDynamics or New Relic.
  • Participate in on-call rotations and lead incident response and post-mortem processes
  • Define and track SLOs, SLAs, and error budgets in collaboration with development teams
Collaboration & Developer Experience
  • Partner with .NET and Java engineers to improve local development environments and toolchains
  • Champion DevOps best practices including shift-left security, trunk-based development, and blue/green or canary deployments
  • Document infrastructure architecture, runbooks, and operational procedures

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
  • 5+ years of experience in a DevOps, Platform Engineering, or Site Reliability Engineering role
  • Strong hands-on experience with AWS core services (compute, networking, storage, security, and container orchestration)
  • Proficiency with CI/CD tooling, specifically Atlassian Bitbucket Pipelines; experience with other platforms (GitLab CI, Azure DevOps, or equivalent) is a plus
  • Solid experience with IaC tools, particularly Terraform
  • Expertise in Helm-based deployments for managing complex Kubernetes application lifecycles.
  • Proven track record in building and maintaining CIS-hardened AMIs and managing system security at the kernel level (we are using packer tool)
  • Working knowledge of containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes / EKS)
  • Scripting proficiency in Bash, Python, or PowerShell
  • Experience supporting JVM-based (Java/Kotlin) and .NET applications in production
  • Strong understanding of networking concepts (DNS, TLS, load balancing, VPNs)
  • Familiarity with Git-based workflows and branching strategies, with hands-on experience in Atlassian Bitbucket

WHAT WOULD BE IDEAL
  • Experience with Microsoft Azure (AKS, Azure DevOps, App Services, Azure Monitor)
  • AWS certifications such as AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional or AWS Solutions Architect
  • Experience with service mesh technologies (Istio, Linkerd) and API gateways
  • Knowledge of database DevOps practices including schema migration tooling (Flyway, Liquibase)
  • Exposure to FinOps practices and cloud cost management tooling
  • Familiarity with compliance frameworks such as PCI, SOC 2, ISO 27001 as they relate to cloud environments
  • Hands-on experience executing and remediating security scans via industry-standard tools like Qualys
  • Advanced knowledge of SELinux policies, intrusion detection systems (IDS), and file integrity monitoring (FIM) to ensure rigorous security postures
