How do DevOps Engineers typically collaborate with development and operations teams on a daily basis?

DevOps Engineers act as a bridge between development and operations teams by automating workflows, facilitating communication, and ensuring smooth software deployments. On a daily basis, they work closely with developers to integrate code changes, manage CI/CD pipelines, and troubleshoot build or deployment issues. They also collaborate with IT operations to monitor system performance, address infrastructure concerns, and implement security best practices. This collaborative approach helps ensure rapid delivery of reliable software while minimizing downtime.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DevOps Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DevOps Engineer, you need a solid understanding of software development, IT operations, automation, and CI/CD practices, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with tools such as Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS/Azure, and configuration management systems like Ansible or Chef is highly valued, along with relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified DevOps Engineer). Strong problem-solving abilities, collaboration, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for bridging development and operations teams. These skills and qualities are important for ensuring efficient software delivery, system reliability, and seamless collaboration across the software development lifecycle.

What Is a DevOps Engineer?

As a DevOps engineer, you collaborate with the IT development and operations teams to oversee the continuous integration of software applications throughout development, deployment, and infrastructure management. Your job duties include coding, scripting, testing, managing hardware and network configurations, logging, and performing health checks. You may be responsible for managing the automation processes between development and operations, and ensuring they work together for code releases. You may use a variety of DevOps tools like Nagios, Docker, and Git.

What are DevOps Engineers?

DevOps Engineers are IT professionals who bridge the gap between software development and operations. They work to automate and streamline the software delivery process by using tools and practices that enable continuous integration, continuous delivery, and quick deployment. Their responsibilities include configuring infrastructure, monitoring systems, managing CI/CD pipelines, and ensuring reliable releases. DevOps Engineers often collaborate with developers, QA, and IT staff to ensure consistent and efficient workflows. Their goal is to improve collaboration, increase deployment speed, and maintain system reliability.

Job description

Job Title: Lead DevOps Engineer – Embedded Ground Vehicle Systems
Job Description

This role leads the implementation of modern DevOps practices across embedded software development teams supporting ground vehicle platforms. You will design and standardize CI/CD automation for hardware- and software-in-the-loop environments, drive cultural transformation toward agile and DevOps-based engineering models, and mentor teams as they modernize their development lifecycle. The position offers the opportunity to shape technical architectures, integrate AI-assisted development tools, and directly influence software delivery efficiency, quality, and scalability for next-generation ground vehicle programs.

Responsibilities

  • Design and standardize CI/CD pipeline automation patterns tailored for embedded systems, including hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and software-in-the-loop (SIL) testing.
  • Establish scalable DevOps architectures that support complex embedded software programs and align automation pipelines with program constraints and requirements.
  • Enable and coach engineering teams to implement, customize, and maintain CI/CD pipelines that support multi-disciplinary development workflows.
  • Mentor embedded software and systems engineering teams to adopt modern software development practices, including agile, DevOps, and continuous delivery principles.
  • Act as a technical escalation point for troubleshooting CI/CD pipeline issues, including debugging infrastructure, resolving automation failures, and optimizing build and test processes.
  • Maintain, enhance, and secure automation systems, including containerized environments, infrastructure-as-code configurations, and deployment workflows.
  • Drive cultural transformation from legacy, document-heavy workflows toward agile, DevOps-based engineering models focused on automation, feedback, and continuous improvement.
  • Evaluate, pilot, and integrate AI capabilities such as AI-assisted code review, automated debugging, and intelligent test selection into development workflows.
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, reference architectures, and best-practice guides for DevOps tooling, pipelines, and infrastructure.
  • Create and deliver training materials, workshops, and knowledge-sharing sessions to support long-term scalability and consistent adoption of DevOps practices.
  • Collaborate closely with software, systems, and hardware teams to ensure DevOps solutions meet the needs of embedded ground vehicle platforms.
  • Support compliance and safety-critical requirements by aligning pipelines and processes with relevant frameworks and standards.
  • Continuously assess and improve pipeline performance, reliability, and security, including container security and infrastructure hardening.
Essential Skills
  • Strong understanding of embedded systems architecture and communication protocols such as CAN, LIN, and Ethernet.
  • Hands-on embedded software development experience using languages such as C and C++.
  • Proven experience designing, building, and maintaining CI/CD pipelines, with GitLab preferred.
  • Experience working with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) and software-in-the-loop (SIL) testing environments.
  • Proficiency with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform and Ansible.
  • Strong Linux experience combined with scripting skills in Python and Bash.
  • Experience with containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes, including container security considerations.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence teams and lead technical transformation initiatives in complex engineering environments.
  • Experience building and maintaining automated pipelines in complex, multi-disciplinary engineering environments, particularly those involving embedded systems.
  • Familiarity with compliance frameworks for safety-critical systems, including automotive or defense contexts.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate DevOps concepts for traditional engineering teams.
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
  • At least 3 years of experience in embedded systems combined with DevOps or release engineering responsibilities.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience with ROS and AUTOSAR or similar automotive middleware and frameworks.
  • Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools such as Copilot and large language model (LLM) workflows.
  • Experience in defense or Army programs, particularly involving ground vehicle systems.
  • Knowledge of safety-critical standards in automotive or defense domains, including frameworks such as MIL-STD-882E or similar.
  • Exposure to autonomy, advanced embedded systems, and AI integration in software development workflows.
  • Experience with container security practices and secure DevOps (DevSecOps) approaches.
  • Background with ground vehicle systems, including CAN, LIN, and related automotive communication protocols.
  • Interest in mentoring, knowledge sharing, and driving continuous process improvement across engineering teams.
Work Environment

The role operates in an engineering-focused environment supporting embedded systems for ground vehicle platforms. You will collaborate closely with software, systems, and hardware teams in a fast-paced modernization initiative that is transitioning from legacy workflows to DevOps-driven delivery. The culture emphasizes mentorship, knowledge sharing, and continuous process improvement, with a strong focus on automation, quality, and scalability. The position is likely onsite or hybrid in proximity to a defense or vehicle research and development ecosystem similar to a GVSC or Detroit Arsenal-type environment, providing exposure to cutting-edge embedded systems, autonomy, and AI integration.
