What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DevOps Engineer 2, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DevOps Engineer 2, you need a solid background in software development, system administration, automation, and experience with cloud platforms, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with CI/CD tools like Jenkins, configuration management systems like Ansible or Chef, and certifications such as AWS Certified DevOps Engineer are typically valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, collaboration, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure efficient deployment processes, system reliability, and seamless teamwork in dynamic technical environments.

What other jobs can a DevOps engineer do?

A DevOps Engineer can transition into roles such as Site Reliability Engineer, Cloud Engineer, Automation Engineer, or Systems Engineer, leveraging skills in scripting, cloud platforms, and infrastructure management. These roles often require knowledge of tools like Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines, and may involve working in agile environments or with cloud providers like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.

How does a DevOps Engineer 2 typically collaborate with development and operations teams to streamline deployment processes?

As a DevOps Engineer 2, you play a crucial role in bridging the gap between development and operations teams. You’ll often work closely with developers to automate code integration and deployment pipelines, ensuring that updates move smoothly from development to production. Collaboration usually involves participating in daily stand-ups, troubleshooting deployment issues, and implementing monitoring solutions. This position also requires you to mentor junior team members and coordinate with operations to maintain infrastructure reliability and security. Strong communication and problem-solving skills are key to effectively aligning both teams’ objectives.

What are DevOps Engineers?

DevOps Engineers are IT professionals who bridge the gap between software development and operations teams. They automate processes, manage infrastructure, and ensure that code can be released quickly and reliably. Their responsibilities often include implementing CI/CD pipelines, monitoring system performance, and maintaining cloud environments. DevOps Engineers help organizations deliver software updates efficiently and with minimal downtime. They use tools like Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud platforms to achieve these goals.

What is the difference between Devops Engineer 2 vs Devops Engineer 1?

AspectDevops Engineer 2Devops Engineer 1
Experience LevelMid-level, typically 3-5 yearsEntry to junior level, 1-3 years

Is DevOps dead due to AI?

DevOps engineers focus on automating and streamlining software development and deployment processes. While AI tools are increasingly used to enhance automation and monitoring, they complement rather than replace the core skills of DevOps professionals, making the role still relevant in managing complex systems and infrastructure.

What is a DevOps engineer 2?

A DevOps Engineer 2 is a mid-level professional responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining automated deployment pipelines, infrastructure, and monitoring systems. They typically have experience with tools like Jenkins, Docker, and Kubernetes, and work to improve collaboration between development and operations teams. This role often requires strong scripting skills and knowledge of cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure.

What engineer makes $500,000 a year?

A senior DevOps Engineer with extensive experience, specialized skills in automation, cloud platforms, and infrastructure management can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially in high-cost-of-living areas or within large tech companies. Such roles often require advanced certifications, leadership responsibilities, and expertise in tools like Kubernetes, AWS, or Azure.

Job description

DevOps Engineer II
Location: 99% Remote Position Type: Full-time
About Us
Mountville Inc. is a forward-thinking company committed to leveraging modern technology to drive innovation and efficiency. We are seeking a talented DevOps Engineer II to join our small, high-impact platform team. This role is central to how we build, ship, and operate the infrastructure behind our software.
Job Description
As a DevOps Engineer II, you will own and evolve the infrastructure that supports our software development lifecycle. Your focus will be on building and maintaining CI/CD (Continuous Integration / Continuous Delivery) pipelines, managing Azure cloud services, and keeping our containerized applications reliable, secure, and scalable. You'll work closely with a tight-knit team and have real ownership over the platforms you run.
Key Responsibilities
  • CI/CD Pipeline Development: Design, implement, and maintain CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions and Azure DevOps to automate build, test, and deployment.
  • Version Control: Manage source code repositories in Git and GitHub, championing sound branching strategies and code-review practices.
  • Cloud Infrastructure Management: Configure, deploy, and manage Azure cloud resources with an emphasis on availability, security, and scalability.
  • Kubernetes Operations: Deploy, operate, scale, and troubleshoot containerized applications on Kubernetes - including day-to-day operational support and incident recovery.
  • Infrastructure as Code: Define and manage infrastructure declaratively using Terraform, and apply GitOps practices to keep deployed state in sync with version control.
  • Monitoring and Logging: Build and maintain monitoring, logging, and alerting so we catch issues before our users do.
  • Security: Apply security best practices across the platform, including secrets management, access control, vulnerability assessment, and patching.
  • Automation: Spot manual toil in the development lifecycle and replace it with scripts and tooling that make the team faster.
  • Collaboration: Partner with development teams to understand their needs and give them the tools and support for a smooth path to production.

Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent hands-on experience).
Experience:
  • Proven experience in a DevOps role with a strong grasp of CI/CD practices.
  • Hands-on experience with Git and GitHub - repository management, branching strategies, and code reviews.
  • Strong, practical experience with GitHub Actions and Azure DevOps for pipeline creation and management.
  • Solid experience managing cloud services and infrastructure on Azure.
  • Genuine hands-on Kubernetes experience - deploying, operating, scaling, and troubleshooting real workloads (not just spinning up a cluster).
  • Experience defining infrastructure with Terraform.
  • Strong Linux administration skills, including shell scripting and system configuration.

Skills:
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to troubleshoot complex, cross-system issues.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects and prioritize effectively in a small-team environment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with GitOps workflows for Kubernetes.
  • Familiarity with monitoring and observability tooling such as Datadog and Application Insights.
  • Knowledge of microservices architecture and containerization best practices.
  • Comfort working alongside modern AI-assisted development tooling.
  • Experience with other cloud platforms (AWS, GCP) is a plus.

What We Offer
  • Competitive salary and benefits package.
  • Opportunities for professional growth and development.
  • A collaborative and inclusive work environment.
  • The chance to work with modern technology and own meaningful infrastructure.
