Is DevOps dead due to AI?

DevOps developers continue to play a vital role in automating and managing software deployment, infrastructure, and continuous integration processes. While AI tools are increasingly used to enhance efficiency, they complement rather than replace the core skills of DevOps professionals, who focus on system reliability, scripting, and tool integration.

What does a DevOps developer do?

A DevOps developer is responsible for integrating software development and IT operations to improve deployment frequency, reliability, and automation. They work with tools like Jenkins, Docker, and Kubernetes to automate infrastructure, monitor systems, and ensure continuous integration and delivery. Strong scripting skills and knowledge of cloud platforms are essential for this role.

What are DevOps Developers?

DevOps Developers are IT professionals who combine software development (Dev) and IT operations (Ops) skills to streamline the process of building, testing, and deploying applications. They focus on automating processes, improving collaboration between development and operations teams, and ensuring reliable and efficient software delivery. DevOps Developers often work with tools for continuous integration, continuous deployment (CI/CD), and infrastructure automation. Their goal is to shorten the software development lifecycle while delivering high-quality software. They are skilled in programming, cloud platforms, and system administration.

How does a DevOps Developer typically collaborate with software engineers and IT operations teams?

A DevOps Developer acts as a bridge between software development and IT operations, working closely with both teams to streamline the software delivery process. They are often responsible for automating deployment pipelines, monitoring system health, and ensuring that code moves smoothly from development to production environments. Collaboration usually involves regular stand-up meetings, code reviews, and joint troubleshooting sessions to resolve issues quickly. Effective communication and a strong understanding of both development and infrastructure are crucial for success in this role.

Is DevOps a high paying job?

DevOps developers typically earn higher-than-average salaries due to their expertise in automation, cloud platforms, and tools like Docker and Kubernetes. Compensation varies by experience, location, and industry, but it is generally considered a well-paying role in the tech field.

What engineers make $500,000?

Senior DevOps engineers with extensive experience, specialized skills in automation, cloud platforms, and infrastructure management can earn $500,000 or more annually, especially in high-cost-of-living areas or large organizations. Achieving this level typically requires advanced certifications, leadership roles, and a strong track record of managing complex systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DevOps Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DevOps Developer, you need proficiency in software development, automation, CI/CD practices, and a solid understanding of cloud infrastructure, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with tools like Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, Git, and cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure, along with certifications like AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, is often required. Strong problem-solving, collaboration, and communication skills help bridge the gap between development and operations teams. These capabilities ensure faster, reliable software delivery and efficient system management in dynamic tech environments.

Job description

Re: DevOps Production Operations Lead / Production Operations Engineer / Lead Production Engineer (Windows/IIS/Azure Focus)

Onsite North West Houston TXย

12 Month Contact to hireย

ย

Overview:

  • Responsible for the delivery and operational integrity of the Cybersoft Windows-based application suite.
  • Responsible for the release processes and managing the lifecycle of applications running on IIS, hosted on Windows Server, with data layers in SQL Server, and an increasing footprint in Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS).
  • Responsible for standardizing and improving the build-test-deploy-monitor process.

Key Responsibilities

1. Release & Deployment Management

  • Own the end-to-end release management process for our .NET/IIS-based applications and services.
  • Manage and orchestrate deployments across hybrid environments (on-prem Windows Server clusters and Azure).
  • Develop and maintain the release calendar, coordinating dependencies between SQL Server schema changes, application deployments, and infrastructure updates.
  • Lead go/no-go meetings with a focus on validating health across IIS application pools, Windows Services, and AKS pods.

2. Process & CI/CD Pipeline Management

  • Manage, optimize, and secure our Azure DevOps (Azure Pipelines) CI/CD workflows.
  • Oversee the promotion of build artifacts through staging environments to production.
  • Implement and enforce Infrastructure as Code (IaC) practices using ARM Templates and Terraform for consistent environment provisioning.

3. Operational Excellence & Systems Management

  • Ensure the performance, security, and availability of our IIS web applications and Windows Server infrastructure.
  • Partner with the DevOps team to manage and scale our Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) clusters.
  • Oversee database deployment processes related to SQL Server, working with DBAs/Data Engineers to manage scripts and ensure data integrity during releases.

4. Incident & Problem Management

  • Act as the incident commander for production issues, coordinating efforts between development, infrastructure, and database teams.
  • Utilize deep knowledge of the stack to help triage issuesโ€”from IIS logs and Windows Event Viewer to Azure Monitor, Application Insights, and Kubernetes logs.
  • Drive rigorous Root Cause Analysis (RCA) for incidents and ensure corrective actions are implemented.

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • 5+ years of experience in a technical production, release, or platform management role.
  • Deep, hands-on experience with the Microsoft Stack: Windows Server, IIS configuration/administration, and SQL Server.
  • Proven expertise in managing Azure CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps (Azure Pipelines). Must understand build agents, YAML pipelines, and artifact management.
  • Strong practical knowledge of Kubernetes, specifically Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS). Must understand pods, services, ingress, deployments, and basic troubleshooting.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code (IaC) principles and tools like ARM Templates and Terraform.
  • Familiarity with monitoring and logging tools such as Site24x7, DataDog, Azure Monitor, Application Insights, and Log Analytics.
  • Excellent understanding of networking concepts relevant to Azure (VNet, NSGs, Load Balancers) and on-premises infrastructure.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience managing a hybrid environment (on-premises data centers and Azure).
  • Certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate, Azure DevOps Engineer Expert, or Kubernetes Certified Application Developer (CKAD).
  • Strong scripting skills (PowerShell is a must; Bash/Python a plus) for automation.
  • Previous experience as a .NET developer, Windows system administrator, or SQL DBA is a significant advantage.
