Work EnvironmentCollaborates with development and operations teams, focuses on CI/CD pipelinesDesigns and manages cloud infrastructure, often working on architecture and deployment
Industry UsageCommon in organizations adopting DevOps practices, tech startups, IT service providersPrevalent in companies migrating to or managing cloud-based solutions

The Devops Associate and Cloud Engineer roles share overlapping skills in cloud platforms and automation tools. However, Devops Associates typically focus on integrating development and operations processes, while Cloud Engineers concentrate on designing and maintaining cloud infrastructure. Both roles are essential in modern IT environments, with the Devops Associate often serving as an entry point into DevOps practices within cloud-centric organizations.

Is DevOps still in demand in 2026?

DevOps associates remain in high demand in 2026 due to ongoing digital transformation and the need for continuous integration and deployment. Skills in cloud platforms, automation tools, and scripting are increasingly valuable for organizations seeking efficient software delivery.

What are some common challenges faced by DevOps Associates when integrating new tools into existing workflows?

DevOps Associates often encounter challenges when integrating new tools, such as ensuring compatibility with legacy systems, maintaining security standards, and minimizing downtime during deployment. They must also coordinate closely with both development and operations teams to align on processes and avoid disruptions. Effective communication, thorough testing, and incremental rollouts are key strategies to address these challenges and ensure a smooth transition.

Is DevOps a high paying job?

DevOps Associate roles are generally considered well-paying within the tech industry, with salaries often higher than many entry-level IT positions due to the demand for skills in automation, cloud platforms, and scripting. Compensation varies based on experience, certifications, and location, but it is typically above average for similar roles in technology. Continuous learning and proficiency with tools like Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD pipelines can further enhance earning potential.

Is DevOps dead due to AI?

DevOps associates focus on automating and integrating development and operations processes, and AI tools are increasingly used to enhance automation, monitoring, and decision-making. While AI changes some workflows, it complements DevOps practices rather than replacing the need for skilled professionals in areas like CI/CD, cloud management, and infrastructure as code.

What are entry level DevOps jobs?

Entry-level DevOps jobs typically include roles such as DevOps Engineer I or Junior DevOps Engineer, focusing on tasks like automation, scripting, and monitoring. These positions often require familiarity with tools like Git, Jenkins, Docker, and basic knowledge of cloud platforms, and may require relevant certifications or a degree in computer science or related fields.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DevOps Associate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DevOps Associate, you need a solid understanding of software development, system administration, and automation, often complemented by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with tools like Jenkins, Docker, Kubernetes, Git, and cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure, as well as relevant certifications (e.g., AWS Certified DevOps Engineer) is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and a collaborative mindset help you work effectively with cross-functional teams and respond to evolving technical needs. These competencies enable seamless integration and deployment processes, improve system reliability, and support agile development cycles.

What are DevOps Associates?

DevOps Associates are professionals who support the integration of development and operations teams by automating workflows, improving deployment processes, and enhancing collaboration. They typically assist in managing code releases, infrastructure as code, and monitoring systems while ensuring continuous integration and delivery pipelines run smoothly. DevOps Associates often work with cloud platforms, configuration management tools, and scripting languages to optimize software development and deployment cycles. Their role is vital in reducing manual errors, increasing efficiency, and ensuring rapid delivery of high-quality software.

Job description

About The EngineThe Engine supports Tough Tech founders working to solve the world's most pressing challenges in climate, health, and advanced systems. We do this through founder programs, access to shared infrastructure and labs, and by convening a national network of corporate partners, investors, and experts.
Position Summary
The Engine Accelerator is looking for a Senior Associate of Operations to join our team in Cambridge, MA - someone who brings operational sharpness and genuine curiosity to a 165,000 square foot facility of shop, lab, and coworking space. This is a hands-on, in-person role that sits at the intersection of operational rigor and community - supporting the day-to-day rhythm of our building while helping cultivate a strong, engaged environment for the startups we serve. This is the right role for someone with an entrepreneurial mindset who thrives on variety, moves quickly, takes real ownership, and is genuinely excited to be on the ground floor of a community working on some of the hardest problems in science and technology.
A Day in the Life No two days look the same in this role in this role. You might start the morning restocking supplies and coordinating with a vendor to fix a broken coffee machine, then spend the afternoon supporting a startup with their growth and expansion plans. In between, you're processing invoices, welcoming new team members to the startups in our building, assisting with programming, and finding ways to reduce operational friction so startups can stay focused on building their companies. This role is for someone who is energized by variety and takes pride in keeping things running smoothly - while staying curious about the work happening around them.
Key Responsibilities
Operations & Systems
  • Ensure seamless day-to-day building operations, proactively identifying and resolving issues
  • Support monthly invoicing, contracts, and related processes
  • Oversee inventory management and ordering for building supplies and shared resources
  • Manage building access and coordinate building trainings

Community Experience
  • Foster a welcoming, collaborative environment for our startups
  • Provide on-the-ground support for programming
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for startup inquiries and concerns

Project Ownership
  • Own and execute discrete projects and operational workstreams from start to finish
  • Identify opportunities to improve systems and workflows
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with internal labs, facilities, and programming teams, as well as external vendors

Qualifications
  • 3-5 years of experience in operations
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and details
  • A systems thinker with an entrepreneurial mindset - excited to troubleshoot, experiment, and try new approaches
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Energized by a dynamic, on-your-feet environment - someone who enjoys meeting new people and getting a front-row seat to what startups are building
  • Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively
  • Flexible, adaptable, and eager to learn; willing to roll up their sleeves across a wide range of projects

Nice to Have
  • Experience in or exposure to startups or similar operational roles
