Development Supervisor information

What is a development supervisor?

Development Supervisors are professionals responsible for overseeing and guiding a team engaged in development projects, which may include software development, product development, or organizational growth initiatives. They manage day-to-day activities, ensure that goals and deadlines are met, and facilitate communication between team members and upper management. Additionally, Development Supervisors may be involved in training staff, resolving conflicts, and implementing best practices to improve productivity and quality. Their role is crucial in ensuring that development processes run smoothly and align with organizational objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a development supervisor?

To thrive as a Development Supervisor, you need a solid background in project management, team leadership, and relevant industry experience, often supported by a bachelor’s degree in a related field. Familiarity with project management software (like Asana or Trello), budgeting tools, and possibly certifications such as PMP are valuable. Strong communication, conflict resolution, and motivational skills help you effectively guide teams and manage stakeholder relationships. These skills ensure projects are delivered efficiently, teams remain engaged, and organizational goals are consistently met.

What are some common challenges faced by development supervisors, and how can they be effectively managed?

Development Supervisors often encounter challenges such as balancing multiple projects, managing diverse team dynamics, and ensuring that deadlines and quality standards are consistently met. Effective communication, strong organizational skills, and the ability to delegate tasks appropriately are crucial for overcoming these challenges. Building trust within the team and providing clear guidance helps maintain productivity and morale, while regular check-ins and open feedback channels can address issues before they escalate. Continuous professional development and staying updated on industry best practices also support long-term success in this role.

Job description

What You’ll Lead

The City of Cortez is hiring a Collection Development Supervisor to guide and coordinate the library’s collection development process, ensuring materials are selected, organized, and maintained in line with sound librarianship practices and the library’s Collection Development Policy. This role also supports library operations through essential clerical and service-related tasks.

Key responsibilities include supervising collection development workflows, maintaining accurate files and records, and building reliable electronic and physical file management systems.

Required Qualifications/skills
  • Bachelor’s Degree, or three years of library-related experience (or equivalent combination); Master of Library Science preferred
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to build effective working relationships with co-workers and the public
  • Computer literacy, including the ability to teach patrons and staff computer skills
  • Valid Colorado driver license
Compensation & Coverage

This full-time, onsite position in Cortez pays $25.93 per hour and includes: Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance, Retirement, sick leave, and vacation.

A Typical Shift

Your week runs Monday–Friday, with one Saturday each month. You’ll spend time balancing quiet, detail-focused workβ€”reviewing requests, updating records, and keeping both digital and paper systems orderlyβ€”with moments at the public desk where questions and needs shift quickly. Some parts of the day are collaborative, touching base with coworkers to keep priorities aligned; other parts are independent, where you can focus on accuracy and follow-through. You may also step in to help someone navigate a computer task, turning a quick interaction into a helpful learning moment. The day ends with the satisfaction of leaving things organized, current, and ready for the next patron.

Salary: $25.96 - $27.51 per hour
