Overview:

Responsibilities:
The employee will be responsible for maintaining, repairing and controlling the configuration of hydraulically-powered friction stir welding and friction pull plug welding machines:
The employee must develop an in-depth understanding of how the equipment works (customer will supply some formal, equipment-specific training to help accomplish this) and must be able to: determine the root cause of failures, accomplish the required repairs, and identify intermediate solutions when permanent repairs can't be immediately accomplished.
The employee must document problems, the related investigative techniques and corrective actions, and the results of the repair activities and communicate them to co-workers, company and customer personnel.
Employee responsibilities also include developing lists of spare parts to be kept on hand and arranging for the parts to be obtained and then obtaining replacement spare parts when the parts on hand are used.
The employee will become responsible for training other personnel to run these machines. The employee may also be responsible for planning and executing projects executed on these machines.
Qualifications:
Equivalent of a Masters in engineering from an ABET accredited institution, or a BS with at least 5 years of experience. This position requires methodical planning and execution of maintenance and trouble-shooting operations and experience with control systems, hydraulics and electromechanical systems. The ideal candidate will have prior experience operating and maintaining MTS Systems Corporation/PaR/I-STIR friction stir welding equipment or MTS Systems Corporation multi-axis servohydraulic control systems. The ideal employee will also have prior experience with friction stir welding process and/or manufacturing development.
Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required.
Physical Requirements:
Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (30%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (10%). Requires ability to walk between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%). Stairs or elevators can gain access. Requires working in a manufacturing development laboratory environment including on, in, around and under equipment to perform job duties (50%).
Work Environment:
Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (50%). Requires ability to work in manufacturing development laboratory environment (50%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (<15%).
Equipment and Machines:
Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%). Experience operating and/or maintaining I-STIR friction stir weld equipment, MTS multi-axis structural test systems or similar equipment required.
Attendance:
Normal workday is from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.
Other Essential Functions:
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
