What is development and fundraising?

Development and Fundraising professionals are individuals who work to secure financial support for organizations, typically nonprofits or educational institutions. Their primary responsibilities include identifying potential donors, organizing fundraising campaigns and events, writing grant proposals, and cultivating relationships with donors. They play a crucial role in ensuring an organization has the necessary resources to achieve its mission. These professionals often work closely with executive leadership, board members, and marketing teams to develop effective fundraising strategies. Success in this field requires excellent communication, relationship-building, and organizational skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in development and fundraising?

To thrive in Development and Fundraising, you need strong relationship-building, communication, and project management skills, often supported by a degree in nonprofit management, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with donor management systems (CRMs), fundraising platforms, and data analysis tools is typically required, along with certifications such as the CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Executive) being advantageous. Persuasive storytelling, networking ability, and resilience are standout soft skills that help secure and maintain donor support. These skills and qualifications are essential for driving organizational growth, ensuring financial sustainability, and building lasting partnerships.

What are some common challenges faced in development and fundraising roles, and how can professionals successfully address them?

A frequent challenge in Development and Fundraising is cultivating and maintaining relationships with donors while balancing multiple fundraising campaigns and deadlines. Professionals must often juggle outreach, stewardship, reporting, and event planning, all while adapting to changing donor interests or economic climates. Successful fundraisers rely on clear communication, strategic planning, and collaboration with program and communications teams to align messaging and ensure donor engagement. Regularly analyzing fundraising data and being adaptable to new strategies also help address these challenges and drive results.

Job description

Do you enjoy building relationships, connecting people to meaningful work, and confidently asking for support to move a mission forward? Are you someone who can independently drive outreach, set meetings, and turn conversations into real funding support? If youโ€™re looking for a role where you can directly grow revenue and strengthen long-term sustainability for a mission-driven organization, we encourage you to apply.

As the Director of Development & Fundraising, you will lead Central Community Houseโ€™s fundraising and donor engagement efforts, with a focus on expanding corporate and individual giving while strengthening long-term sustainability. This is an autonomous role where you will set strategy and execute fundraising, marketing, and events directly in a lean team environment. You will serve as a key member of the Leadership Team, working closely with the Executive Director to build relationships, diversify and grow revenue, and increase community investment in the organization.

In addition, as the Director of Development & Fundraising you will:

  • Drive proactive outreach, set meetings, and build relationships with donors, corporate partners, and community stakeholders
  • Lead donor conversations and confidently make and close funding asks to grow corporate sponsorships, major gifts, and individual giving
  • Oversee donor stewardship and maintain strong, ongoing relationships
  • Independently develop and execute fundraising strategy, including creating and leading campaigns, donor engagement initiatives, and fundraising events end-to-end (strategy, messaging, outreach, logistics, execution, and follow-up)
  • Lead and execute fundraising and marketing efforts in a lean environment, owning both strategy and day-to-day implementation
  • Serve as a key member of the leadership team, stepping in to support day-to-day operations, keep initiatives moving forward, and provide guidance to staff in the absence of senior leadership
  • Track fundraising progress, manage pipelines, and provide reporting and analysis on development efforts
  • Strengthen fundraising systems and processes, including donor records and reporting in tools such as Bloomerang
  • Collaborate on budgeting, projections, and revenue tracking to support organizational goals
Qualifications:
  • 3โ€“5 years of experience in fundraising, development, donor relations, or related work
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in a related field preferred, or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated success in relationship-building, donor outreach, and making funding asks, with the ability to engage diverse communities with cultural competence and an inclusive mindset
  • Experience in nonprofit or mission-driven environments preferred
  • Comfort working independently while also building strong relationships across staff, volunteers, and community stakeholders
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with donor databases/CRM systems (Bloomerang preferred) and fundraising reporting tools
  • Ability to lead by example, support staff as needed, and step in across functions in a small team environment
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and work both strategically and hands-on with a high level of professionalism, initiative, accountability, and commitment to the mission of Central Community House

At Central Community House, we believe in the power of community. It is our mission to empower people to reach their full potential, be self-supporting, and live cooperatively with others. We do this by building community that meets the needs and nourishes the creative aspirations of one another. Within our neighborhood-based community center, people of all ages come together to learn, play, share their gifts and find assistance when needed. We work to break the cycle of poverty by providing resources, connection, and support that build stronger, more resilient communities. Thatโ€™s why we operate a neighborhood-based community center in the Near East neighborhood of Columbus that offers free, comprehensive programming and community services to create a sense of community for all.
