What is a developer?

A software developer—sometimes referred to as a software engineer, computer programmer, or computer scientist—designs and develops programs, applications, websites, and databases. Their responsibilities include creation, testing, and modification of the code that runs programs within IT systems. Software developers generally have a bachelor’s degree in computer science and are familiar with writing code in at least one programming language.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript, paired with a solid understanding of algorithms and software development principles, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with version control systems (such as Git), integrated development environments (IDEs), and sometimes cloud platforms or specific frameworks is typical. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. Job description

Position Overview

We are hiring for an exciting role as an Environmental Design Engineer based out of our Ocean Pines, MD office! Join a collaborative engineering consulting team that delivers innovative civil and environmental infrastructure solutions for public works and private-sector clients. Our work spans the full project lifecycle - from planning and engineering design through permitting, construction-phase services, and long-term program support.

This is not a traditional site development role. Our projects tackle complex technical challenges that improve environmental quality, strengthen infrastructure resilience, and support the communities we serve.

Project Areas May Include:
  • Site development and civil engineering (site layout, grading, drainage, erosion and sediment control, permitting)

  • Stormwater management and green infrastructure

  • Solid waste management systems

  • Ecosystem restoration and coastal resiliency

  • Water and wastewater treatment, collection, and distribution systems

  • Other environmental and civil infrastructure projects

Responsibilities

You will collaborate with multidisciplinary EA team members and clients to:

  • Lead and perform engineering design tasks

  • Complete engineering calculations and technical evaluations

  • Develop construction plans and technical specifications

  • Prepare technical memoranda and reports

  • Conduct alternatives analyses and feasibility evaluations

  • Provide engineering support during construction, including field visits

This role can be tailored to align with your experience and professional interests. It is ideal for someone eager to grow both technically and managerially while contributing to impactful infrastructure projects.

Required Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license, or Engineer-in-Training actively pursuing P.E. licensure

  • B.S. or M.S. in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or related field

  • 5+ years of environmental infrastructure design experience, with emphasis in site/civil or stormwater management

  • 3+ years of hands-on AutoCAD Civil 3D experience (strong proficiency preferred)

  • Must be willing to travel to local sites throughout Maryland's Eastern Shore and Delaware, with occasional travel to other areas of Maryland and Virginia. Travel is typically short in duration and project-based.

Note:  This position requires specific driving duties. You must be able to pass a motor vehicle records check required by our insurer.

Drug Screen Statement

Offers of employment are contingent upon successful completion of a drug screen.
