Their responsibilities include creation, testing, and modification of the code that runs programs within IT systems. Software developers generally have a bachelor’s degree in computer science and are familiar with writing code in at least one programming language.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Developer, you need strong programming skills in languages like Java, Python, or JavaScript, paired with a solid understanding of algorithms and software development principles, often supported by a degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with version control systems (such as Git), integrated development environments (IDEs), and sometimes cloud platforms or specific frameworks is typical. Problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and effective communication are standout soft skills for this role. In this role, you will deliver expert consultation, design leadership, and platform engineering across DOJ divisions to build secure, reliable, compliant, and userfocused business applications that directly support missioncritical operations. You will ensure all solutions meet DOJ security baselines, follow enterprise governance standards, adhere to FTI, PII, CJIS, and NIST 80053 requirements, and integrate seamlessly with enterprise systems, data platforms, identity controls, and external partners-using modern lifecycle, auditability, and compliance patterns.

Operating within the Dev/Ops Experience, you will lead solution architecture, oversee Application Lifecycle Management (ALM), establish reusable components, evaluate platform capabilities, and provide guidance to developers and business units. You will define technical direction for Power Platform, collaborate with enterprise security, architecture, and data teams, advise management on roadmap decisions, mentor junior developers, and help ensure DOJ's lowcode environment remains stable, scalable, and aligned with enterprise strategy.

  • Power Platform Governance and Compliance: Ensure operational reliability, performance, and compliance across the Power Platform; monitor capacity, environments, connectors, licensing, run histories, DLP policies, and environmentlevel controls; enforce governance (naming conventions, data classification, security roles, lifecycle retention); oversee versioning, dependencies, environment strategy, and risk mitigation, coordinating with Information Security (NISTaligned controls, auditing, logging) and infrastructure teams (identity, integrations, platform sustainability).

  • Power Platform Architecture, Integrations, and ALM: Architect secure integrations with enterprise systems (SharePoint Online, Azure services, SQL, SaaS, DOJ data platforms); guide enterprise/custom connectors, APIs, and integration patterns; lead ALM (managed/unmanaged solutions, Dev/Test/Prod pipelines, GitHub/Azure DevOps automation, standardized deployments); run proofs of concept, evaluate capability updates, and recommend new Microsoft features/approaches that strengthen DOJ's digital service experience; provide authoritative guidance in multiteam modernization efforts.
