What is a Developer Relations job?

Developer Relations (DevRel) is a field focused on building relationships between a company and its developer community. It involves advocacy, education, and support to help developers succeed with the company's products or tools. DevRel professionals create content, engage with developers, provide feedback to internal teams, and foster community growth. Their goal is to enhance developer experience, drive product adoption, and bridge the gap between developers and the organization.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Developer Relations position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Developer Relations professional, you need a strong background in software development, technical communication, and community engagement, often backed by experience in programming and a relevant technical degree. Familiarity with developer tools, cloud platforms, open-source technologies, and experience using platforms like GitHub or Stack Overflow are commonly required. Excellent public speaking, empathy, and the ability to build strong relationships help you advocate effectively for both developers and internal teams. These skills are essential for bridging the gap between a company’s engineering teams and the broader developer community, ensuring effective communication and mutual success.

What job makes $10,000 a month without a degree?

In developer relations, professionals can earn $10,000 or more per month through roles such as developer advocate or community manager, especially with extensive experience, strong technical skills, and a robust network. These positions often involve creating content, speaking at events, and engaging with developer communities, and some may be freelance or remote, reducing formal education requirements.

What does a typical day look like for someone working in Developer Relations?

A typical day in Developer Relations often involves creating technical content such as blog posts, tutorials, or sample code, while also engaging directly with the developer community through events, forums, and social media. You might attend meetings with product and engineering teams to relay community feedback and discuss product improvements. Additionally, Developer Relations professionals frequently present at conferences, lead webinars, and contribute to open-source projects to foster both awareness and adoption. This role is highly collaborative, requiring coordination between marketing, product, and technical teams to ensure the developer community’s needs are met effectively.

Job description

About PDK

ProdataKey (PDK) is a leading innovator in commercial access control. Our intuitive, cloud-based solutions protect life and property across thousands of facilities every day. For 10 consecutive years, PDK has been recognized among Utah's Top 100 fastest-growing companies.

The Role

We're looking for an experienced Developer Advocate to join our Software Integrations team and help grow the PDK integration ecosystem.

This is a uniquely balanced role. Roughly 50% of your time will be spent collaborating with partners, helping them design, build, and troubleshoot integrations with PDK. You'll build strong relationships, guide technical decisions, and ensure partners have an exceptional experience working with our platform. The other 50% of your time will be spent practicing what you preach-building integrations using the same developer tools you champion to our partners. You'll have the opportunity to develop first-party integrations with key technologies, including video surveillance systems, intrusion alarms, intercoms, and business management platforms.

If you love writing code, but also enjoy working with people and helping other developers succeed, this role offers the best of both worlds. Your work will directly shape how partners connect with PDK and how customers experience their physical security systems every day.

Responsibilities

  • Help partners successfully adopt and use PDK APIs, SDKs, and other developer tools in their projects.

  • Lead partner calls, demos, and technical workshops with clarity, enthusiasm, and approachability.

  • Act as a senior technical resource, diagnosing and resolving complex integration challenges.

  • Design and build integrations with third-party applications.

  • Maintain and evolve developer documentation and sample code (developer.pdk.io).

  • Build internal tools that support critical business and operational workflows.

  • Collaborate with other product and engineering teams to improve APIs and the overall developer experience.

  • Evaluate emerging technologies and identify high-impact integration opportunities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field or equivalent experience.

  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, including 3+ years in a senior or lead role.

  • Developer Relations (DevRel) experience is helpful, but not required.

  • Strong communicator who enjoys building relationships with business leaders and developers.

  • Friendly, engaging presence in video calls and written communication.

  • Highly organized and responsive in managing technical conversations and follow-through.

  • Ability to quickly learn unfamiliar technologies and development environments.

  • Deep understanding of modern API and authentication patterns (REST, OAuth, webhooks).

  • Significant experience with JavaScript/TypeScript, including Node.js, React, andNext.js.

  • Attention to detail in developer experience, usability, and interface design.

  • Commitment to clear, high-quality technical documentation.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive salary based on experience

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage

  • 401(k) with company match

  • 3 weeks PTO annually

  • Paid company holidays
