Civil Engineer Intern

Employment Type: Full-Time Internship
Project Duration: Approximately 18 months remaining

Position Summary

We are seeking a motivated Civil Engineer Intern to support engineering, construction, inspection, documentation, and project closeout activities for the Jimmie Davis Bridge Design-Build Project in Shreveport, Louisiana.

This position provides hands-on experience in both the office and field environment and is an excellent opportunity for an engineering student or recent graduate to apply engineering concepts to a major transportation infrastructure project.

The Civil Engineer Intern will assist with engineering studies, existing-condition assessments, design and construction document review, field inspections, project documentation, cost estimates, reports, and coordination with project stakeholders. The successful candidate will work closely with project engineers, inspectors, contractors, consultants, and client representatives to support the successful delivery of the project.

Essential Job FunctionsDesign & Engineering
  • Assist with preparation and review of plans and specifications based on project scope.
  • Perform engineering calculations under the direction of project engineers.
  • Assist with engineering studies, existing-condition assessments, and scope-of-work development.
  • Review design and construction documents for accuracy and completeness.
  • Assist with preparation of cost estimates and bid packages.
  • Review project schedules and assist with tracking project activities.
  • Apply engineering concepts and principles to real-world construction and infrastructure projects.
Project Management & Coordination
  • Attend project meetings and prepare meeting minutes.
  • Maintain organized project files, records, and documentation.
  • Coordinate with clients, subcontractors, consultants, utility companies, contractors, and other project stakeholders.
  • Assist with preparation and maintenance of project documentation.
  • Support project closeout activities, including as-built documentation and punch-list tracking.
  • Organize and prioritize daily tasks to ensure efficient use of time and resources.
  • Assist with managing projects involving a variety of engineering and construction-related tasks.
Field Inspection & Construction Support
  • Assist with preparation of pre-inspection packages, including analysis, scope-of-work development, and cost estimates.
  • Assist with field inspections to assess existing conditions.
  • Review and document test data and field information.
  • Create and edit reports related to construction, maintenance, and repair activities.
  • Maintain inspection records, including photographs, weather documentation, time-and-material reports, and other project records.
  • Prepare and submit required daily reports to project management.
  • Assist with written and oral presentations to supervisors, clients, and project stakeholders.
  • Assist in verifying that work being performed meets applicable plans, specifications, codes, standards, and project requirements.
  • Maintain accurate as-built records and assist with tracking punch-list items.

  • Works under the direction of the Project Engineer and/or Project Manager.
  • May assist with coordination and oversight of CAD drafting activities.
  • May provide indirect support and coordination to field inspection personnel.
Education
  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a B.S. degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline from an accredited university.
Experience
  • Previous internship, co-op, construction, transportation, or engineering experience is preferred but not required.
  • Experience with roadway, bridge, structural, or transportation construction is a plus.
License / Certification
  • E.I. / E.I.T. certification is preferred.
  • Ability to obtain E.I. / E.I.T. certification is desirable.
Physical Demands

This position includes both office and field responsibilities. Field work may require the ability to:

  • Stand and walk for extended periods.
  • Walk on uneven or construction surfaces.
  • Climb, balance, stoop, kneel, or crawl as necessary.
  • Reach with hands and arms and handle materials or equipment.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Work safely around construction activities and equipment.
  • Regularly communicate through talking and hearing.
  • Use close, distance, color, and peripheral vision and adjust focus as required.
Work Environment

The position involves a combination of office and field work. Field activities may occur in varying weather conditions, temperatures, and noise levels. Employees are expected to follow all applicable safety requirements and maintain a professional and safety-conscious approach while working on the project site.
