Job description

Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Systems Engineering, or a related Science, Engineering or Mathematics field, plus a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree, plus 6 months of relevant experience.
CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Department of Defense Secret security clearance is obtainable within a reasonable amount of time after hire. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required. Candidate must be able to travel to the Pittsfield, MA office once every 3 weeks.
Responsibilities for this Position
ROLE AND POSITION OBJECTIVES:
General Dynamics Mission Systems is seeking a Sr Systems Engineer 2 to support the D5LE2 program within the SWC Fire Control engineering organization. The successful candidate will apply foundational systems engineering principles across the system development life cycle, contributing to the design, analysis, and verification of mission-critical fire control subsystems supporting the U.S. Navy's strategic deterrent. This role is ideal for an early-career engineer looking to build deep domain expertise in a safety-critical, long-horizon defense program while working alongside experienced systems engineers and technical leads.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Support requirements analysis, functional analysis, performance analysis, system design, trade studies, integration and test (verification) for D5LE2 subsystems under the guidance of senior engineers
  • Assist in developing and maintaining system models and architectures using MBSE tools (Cameo/MagicDraw, DOORS) in support of D5LE2 program milestones
  • Apply developing critical thinking skills to identify and escalate system design weaknesses with proposed solutions
  • Perform interface definition studies of system components and products under direct supervision
  • Research and analyze vendor products, COTS components, GFE/CFE, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application
  • Generate technical engineering products using appropriate standards, processes, procedures, and tools (T9001, SPALT, peer review)
  • Develop system security documentation on both new and fielded information systems
  • Plan and execute sub-tasks for assigned activities, tracking progress against schedule
  • Support Modeling and Simulation activities in alignment with D5LE2 program objectives
  • Participate in peer reviews and contribute to the continuous improvement of engineering processes
  • Identify opportunities to apply AI for continuous improvement and innovation

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Solid understanding and application of systems engineering principles, concepts, and theories
  • Solid use of tools for managing requirements (DOORS or equivalent) and modeling systems (Cameo/MagicDrawor equivalent)
  • Developing familiarity with MBSE methodologies and digital engineering concepts
  • Solid written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly report findings relevant to sound systems engineering design
  • Solid ability to effectively use Microsoft Office tools for documentation, analysis, and presentation
  • Ability to grasp and apply new information quickly and handle complex assignments efficiently
  • Understanding of the system development life cycle from concept through disposal
  • Awareness of safety and surety principles in the context of strategic weapons systems

D5LE2 Program Context:
D5LE2 is the next-generation life extension of the Trident II D5 strategic weapons system, supporting the U.S. Navy's sea-based nuclear deterrent through the 2080s
  • Key milestones: Preliminary Design Review (PDR) 2028, Critical Design Review (CDR) 2032
  • Engineering team applies MBSE, digital engineering, and rigorous systems engineering processes in a safety-critical, CNWDI-controlled environment
  • Part of the SWC Fire Control engineering organization (DE256) at General Dynamics Mission Systems, Pittsfield, MA
