What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Developer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or JavaScript), software development methodologies, and a relevant degree or certifications in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and frameworks or libraries specific to your tech stack is typically required. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills help you collaborate effectively and adapt to project needs. These skills ensure you can build reliable, maintainable software solutions that meet business objectives and user requirements.

How do Developer Developers typically collaborate with other teams during a project lifecycle?

Developer Developers often work closely with cross-functional teams, including designers, product managers, and QA specialists, to deliver robust software solutions. They participate in agile ceremonies like daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and code reviews to ensure alignment and transparency. Regular collaboration helps identify potential issues early, streamline workflows, and maintain high code quality. Open communication and a team-oriented mindset are key to thriving in this collaborative environment.

Job description

Job Title: Intermediate / Senior Civil Engineer
Location: Fraser Valley, BC (Abbotsford-based office)
Client: Leading multi‑disciplinary engineering consultancy (civil, geotechnical, structural, materials)
Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent
Salary: $100K+ (Depending on experience, scope to go much higher based on experience)
About the Client
Our client is a well-established consulting engineering firm in the Fraser Valley (since 2003), offering "one‑stop" engineering solutions - geotechnical, structural, civil, and materials testing. They serve a broad market, including residential (single-family, townhomes, condos), commercial, institutional, and infrastructure projects. Their team embodies a strong commitment to technical excellence, environmental stewardship, and ethical practice.
Role Overview
We are partnering with our client to find an experienced Intermediate or Senior Civil Engineer to grow their civil department. This role is a high-impact position: you will lead and contribute to civil engineering projects such as stormwater management, erosion & sediment control, septic system design, and site servicing. The ideal candidate will be technically strong, client-facing, and capable of mentoring junior staff while managing project deliverables.
Key Responsibilities
  • Project Leadership & Delivery
    • Lead civil engineering design for a variety of projects (residential subdivision, commercial site, infrastructure).
    • Prepare conceptual, preliminary and detailed civil designs: site grading, drainage, stormwater management, erosion/sediment control (ESC), septic systems.
    • Oversee production of design drawings, technical reports, cost estimates, specifications, and permit submissions.
  • Technical Analysis & Modelling
    • Perform hydraulic/hydrologic modelling (e.g., rational method, SWM modeling).
    • Conduct drainage analysis, detention design, and flow control.
    • Ensure design meets municipal, provincial, and environmental standards.
  • Quality Assurance / Quality Control (QA/QC)
    • Review and check designs (own and junior staff).
    • Conduct design validation, risk assessments, and peer reviews.
  • Site & Client Engagement
    • Participate in site visits, geotechnical investigations, and field construction reviews.
    • Liaise with clients, municipal authorities, contractors, and other consultants.
    • Support project meetings, coordinate design deliverables, and manage timelines.
  • Mentorship & Team Development
    • Mentor intermediate and junior civil engineers or CAD/design technicians.
    • Provide hands-on technical guidance, review work, and help build skill capacity.
  • Business Development Support
    • Contribute to proposals, scopes of work, and cost estimates.
    • Support the civil team's growth by identifying opportunities for service expansion.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Degree in Civil Engineering (B.Eng. or M.Eng.) from an accredited institution.
  • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) registration in BC (or eligible).
  • Intermediate level: ~5-10 years of experience in civil/site engineering; Senior level: 10+ years.
  • Proven experience in stormwater design, ESC (Erosion & Sediment Control), septic design, and site servicing.
  • Proficiency with engineering software: AutoCAD (Civil 3D preferred), hydrology/hydraulic modeling tools, and Microsoft Office suite.
  • Strong technical writing skills: reports, design narratives, permit applications.
  • Excellent communication and client management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, set priorities, and deliver on deadlines.
  • Experience leading or mentoring team members is a strong asset.
Why This Role is Attractive
  • Diverse Project Exposure: Work across civil, geotechnical, and structural teams on a wide range of project types (residential, commercial, infrastructure).
  • Growth Opportunity: As the civil department scales, there is meaningful opportunity to shape processes, lead design, and mentor.
  • Impact & Responsibility: Lead technically meaningful work that supports growth and sustainability in the region.
  • Collaborative Culture: Join a firm rooted in professional integrity, environmental respect, and multi-disciplinary collaboration.
  • Local Focus: Based in the Fraser Valley, the firm has strong roots locally but also ambitions for geographic expansion.
