What is a desktop refresh?

A Desktop Refresh is the process of replacing or upgrading existing desktop computers within an organization with newer models or updated hardware and software. This helps ensure that employees have up-to-date, secure, and efficient equipment to perform their work tasks. Typically, a desktop refresh cycle occurs every 3-5 years and may involve migrating data, installing new operating systems, and configuring applications to meet company standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a desktop refresh technician?

To thrive as a Desktop Refresh Technician, you need a solid understanding of computer hardware, operating systems, and imaging processes, typically supported by experience in IT support or a related certification such as CompTIA A+. Familiarity with deployment tools like Microsoft SCCM, asset management systems, and troubleshooting utilities is crucial. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and clear communication help ensure a smooth rollout and minimal disruption for end users. These skills and qualities are important for efficiently upgrading systems, maintaining user productivity, and ensuring data integrity during large-scale refresh projects.

What are the typical challenges faced during a desktop refresh project, and how can they be managed effectively?

A desktop refresh project often involves replacing or upgrading a large number of user workstations, which can present challenges such as minimizing downtime, ensuring data migration, and accommodating diverse user needs. Effective communication with end-users, careful scheduling to avoid business disruption, and thorough pre-deployment testing are essential for success. Collaborating closely with IT support, project managers, and users helps identify potential issues early and ensures a smooth transition. Familiarity with imaging and deployment tools, as well as strong troubleshooting skills, are key assets in this role.

Who We Are

CoVolt Power is a leading utility-scale EPC (Engineering, Procurement & Construction) company specializing in the design and delivery of solar, battery energy storage (BESS), and high-voltage infrastructure. Since its founding in 2005, the company has built a reputation for de-risking project delivery and providing creative, integrated solutions that span the power and digital infrastructure sectors.

Consistently ranked as a top-tier EPC, CoVolt Power leverages a mission-driven approach to safety and quality, delivering thousands of megawatts in renewable assets that support a more resilient and sustainable energy future for developers, utilities, independent power producers (IPPs), and data center operators across North America.

The Role

CoVolt Power is seeking an IT Support Technician to join our Digital Technology team in Houston, Texas (4 days in office, 1 remote). This role serves as a key member of the support organization, providing technical assistance and a high-quality support experience to employees across corporate offices, remote locations, and project sites.

The IT Support Technician will troubleshoot hardware, software, mobile device, identity, Microsoft 365, and connectivity issues while supporting device management, asset lifecycle activities, and employee onboarding and offboarding.

The ideal candidate is customer-focused, highly organized, technically capable, and comfortable taking ownership of issues through resolution in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide Level 1 and Level 2 technical support through the IT service management platform, phone, Teams, email, and in-person support.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve Windows, Microsoft 365, mobile device, hardware, software, printing, peripheral, VPN, Wi-Fi, and connectivity issues.
  • Maintain ownership of incidents and service requests through resolution, escalating complex issues to appropriate internal teams, vendors, or managed service providers when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate ticket documentation and support established service-level objectives.
  • Deploy and support monitors, docking stations, printers, peripherals, conference room technology, and other end-user equipment.
  • Support device enrollment, configuration, compliance, and policy deployment through Microsoft Intune.
  • Perform basic hardware diagnostics and coordinate warranty repairs or equipment replacement.
  • Maintain accurate hardware inventory, software licensing, and asset assignment records and support equipment refresh and lifecycle activities.
  • Coordinate recovery of company devices and securely prepare returned equipment for reassignment or disposal in accordance with company standards.
  • Support Microsoft 365 services, including Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint, Office applications, and Exchange Online.
  • Perform approved user administration activities within Microsoft Entra ID and Microsoft 365, including password resets, MFA troubleshooting, account lockouts, group membership, and access requests.
  • Support employee onboarding and offboarding activities, including device enrollment, authentication, access, peripherals, and equipment recovery.
  • Provide support for company-managed iOS and Android mobile devices.
  • Create and maintain technical procedures, troubleshooting guides, knowledge articles, and end-user documentation.
  • Identify recurring issues and contribute to root cause analysis, process improvement, automation, and problem management activities.
  • Participate in technology deployments, upgrades, and Digital Technology modernization initiatives.
  • Follow established cybersecurity, change management, asset management, and access control requirements.

Required Skills and Experience

  • 2+ years of experience in Help Desk, Service Desk, Desktop Support, or IT Support within a corporate environment.
  • Experience supporting Windows operating systems and Microsoft 365 applications.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Entra ID, Microsoft 365, and Exchange Online.
  • Experience or working knowledge of Microsoft Intune and endpoint management.
  • Experience supporting iOS and Android mobile devices.
  • Knowledge of basic networking concepts, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPN, and wireless connectivity.
  • Understanding of MFA and basic identity and access management concepts.
  • Experience using an IT service management or ticketing platform.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong commitment to customer service and delivering a positive employee experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Experience supporting Microsoft Intune-managed devices and Microsoft Entra ID.
  • Familiarity with Windows Autopilot and modern endpoint management.
  • Experience supporting geographically distributed, remote, or field-based employees.
  • Experience in construction, engineering, field operations, or a similar environment.
  • Experience working within an ITIL-based service environment.
  • CompTIA A+, Network+, Security+, ITIL Foundation, Microsoft 365, Endpoint Administrator, or similar technical certifications.

What We're Looking For

We are looking for someone who combines strong technical troubleshooting skills with a customer-first mindset and a high level of ownership and accountability. The right candidate will take responsibility for issues through resolution, communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical employees, and know when to engage other Digital Technology resources or service providers.

This individual should be organized, dependable, adaptable, and comfortable working in a growing environment. We value someone who looks beyond resolving the immediate ticket to identify recurring problems, improve documentation, simplify processes, and find opportunities for automation and continuous improvement.
