About The Public Defender of Indiana: The Public Defender of Indiana has an opening for a full-time (37.5 hours/week) front desk assistant. The office provides legal representation to indigent incarcerated men, women, and children in state court post-conviction proceedings. 

Role overview: The front desk assistant plays a vital role in supporting our clients’ legal representation and to our entire office’s function. Responsibilities include but are not limited to front desk phone support, coordinating communication between clients and attorneys, processing incoming client and court mail, ordering documents and other records, and maintaining records in the case management system. Our ideal candidate will be able to comfortably multi-task and communicate professionally with co-workers, outside agencies, court staff, and clients. Candidates should demonstrate dependability, initiative, and responsibility; possess familiarity with legal proceedings; be proficient in Microsoft applications; and have an interest in indigent criminal defense and compassion for our clients and our work. 

Salary Statement

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $40,000.00, but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Supports our clients’ legal representation and to our entire office’s function.
  •  Responsibilities include but are not limited to front desk phone support, coordinating communication between clients and attorneys, processing incoming client and court mail, ordering documents and other records, and maintaining records in the case management system. 
  • Supports the daily operations of an organization by performing general office tasks.

  • A High School diploma or its equivalent is required; bachelor’s degree or Paralegal Certificate preferred.
  • Working knowledge of general office functions and clerical procedures.
  • Active listening skills.
  • Excellent critical thinking skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Excellent attention to detail and proofreading skills.
  • Proficient computer skills required, including but not limited to Microsoft Word, Excel, case management and data base tools.
  • Ability to work with sensitive documents and information, and be privy to sensitive agency information without divulging information to internal or external parties.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to provide effective and professional customer service to internal and external parties.
