Designated Engineering Representative information

What is the difference between Designated Engineering Representative vs Quality Assurance Inspector?

AspectDesignated Engineering RepresentativeQuality Assurance Inspector
CredentialsEngineering license, certifications in relevant fieldsQuality assurance certifications, inspection training
Work EnvironmentDesign review, technical decision-making, engineering tasksInspection, testing, compliance verification
Employer & Industry UsageManufacturing, aerospace, engineering firmsManufacturing plants, construction sites, aerospace

The main difference is that a Designated Engineering Representative (DER) is authorized to make engineering decisions and approve designs, while a Quality Assurance Inspector focuses on inspecting and verifying product quality. Both roles are essential in manufacturing and aerospace industries but serve different functions in ensuring safety and compliance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Designated Engineering Representative (DER), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Designated Engineering Representative (DER), you need deep expertise in aeronautical engineering, regulatory compliance knowledge, and usually an engineering degree with significant industry experience. Familiarity with FAA regulations, certification processes, engineering analysis tools, and documentation systems is critical, and FAA DER authorization is required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help DERs collaborate with regulatory agencies and engineering teams. These skills and qualifications ensure safe, compliant aircraft designs and smooth certification processes within the aviation industry.

What are some common challenges faced by Designated Engineering Representatives (DERs) in coordinating with regulatory authorities?

Designated Engineering Representatives (DERs) often encounter challenges when interpreting and applying complex regulatory standards to unique or innovative projects. They must ensure that all documentation and test results meet strict FAA requirements, which can involve extensive communication and negotiation with regulatory authorities. Additionally, DERs may need to balance project timelines with the thoroughness required for compliance, making strong organizational and interpersonal skills essential for success. Collaborating effectively with both internal engineering teams and external regulators is key to overcoming these challenges and ensuring certification success.

What is a Designated Engineering Representative (DER)?

A Designated Engineering Representative (DER) is an individual authorized by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to approve or recommend approval for technical data and engineering designs related to aircraft certification. DERs are typically highly experienced engineers or technical experts who ensure that aviation products meet all safety and regulatory standards. They work either as independent consultants or as part of an organization's engineering team, helping to streamline the certification process. DERs play a critical role in maintaining the safety and compliance of the aviation industry.

Job description

Liaison Stress Engineer (MRB)
Location: Dallas-Fort Worth, TX (Onsite) | Salary: $85K to $120K + Benefits | Employment: Full-time
WHO WE ARE
Altitude Aerospace delivers engineering and certification solutions for commercial and VIP aircraft programs worldwide. With FAA DER, EASA DOA, and TCCA DAO approvals, we support customers from concept through certification and in-service. Our 150+ person team across the US, Canada, and France works on programs for major OEMs and completion centers globally. We offer 100% employer-paid medical, dental, and vision insurance, SIMPLE IRA retirement plan, paid vacation and PTO, and 8 paid holidays.
THE ROLE
Serve as an onsite Liaison Stress Engineer supporting active aircraft maintenance and repair programs in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. You will bridge the gap between the shop floor and engineering, analyzing structural repairs, performing stress assessments, and coordinating directly with the MRB team on the aircraft. This is a hands-on liaison role on a team of 10 to 12 engineers where your technical judgment and communication skills drive real-time disposition decisions.
WHAT YOUโ€™LL DO
Analyze & Disposition
  • Perform stress analysis on structural repairs, including damage assessment and repair substantiation.
  • Evaluate repair schemes against OEM structural repair manuals (SRMs) and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct analytical assessments using hand calculations and FEM tools to validate repair integrity.
  • Review and disposition non-conformances and engineering discrepancies found during maintenance inspections.

Liaison & Coordinate
  • Serve as the engineering point of contact between design, stress, manufacturing, and quality teams to communicate and implement repair dispositions.
  • Work directly with the MRB team on the aircraft to assess damage and develop repair solutions in real time.
  • Communicate repair recommendations clearly to maintenance crews, inspectors, and program management.
  • Coordinate with OEM engineering and certification authorities as needed for non-standard repairs.
  • Document all analysis, findings, and repair dispositions with thorough engineering substantiation.

Impact: Your analysis and coordination directly determine whether aircraft return to service safely and on schedule. You are the engineering voice on the floor making real-time structural decisions.
WHAT YOU BRING
Required
  • Bachelor's in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Structural Engineering
  • 5+ years stress analysis experience in an aerospace MRO, OEM, or MRB environment
  • Strong analytical skills with proficiency in classical hand calculations for metallic and composite structures
  • Experience analyzing and substantiating structural repairs per SRM and regulatory standards
  • Solid understanding of aircraft structural design principles, fatigue, and damage tolerance concepts
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for documenting analysis and coordinating across engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams
  • Ability to work onsite in a shop floor and office environment, interfacing directly with maintenance personnel
  • Attention to detail and follow-through on engineering dispositions

Preferred
  • FEM experience (NASTRAN, ABAQUS, or similar)
  • Prior MRB or Designated Engineering Representative (DER) experience
  • Familiarity with large transport category or military aircraft platforms
  • Experience with composite repair analysis and substantiation

WHY ALTITUDE
  • Strong Professional Team: Join an experienced group of engineers on a major, long-running aircraft program
  • Real Programs: Work on active aircraft with firm deadlines, not shelf studies. Your work goes back into service.
  • Variety: Exposure to commercial, VIP, and military platforms across multiple programs and clients
  • Growth: Small enough to learn multiple disciplines, large enough for international projects
  • Full Benefits: 100% employer-paid medical, dental, and vision. SIMPLE IRA. Paid vacation, PTO, and 8 holidays.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Onsite role in Dallas-Fort Worth, TX (remote may be considered)
  • Full-time or contract (6-month minimum contract length)
  • Background check and drug screen may be required ย
  • ITAR eligibility may apply (U.S. person status may be required)

Altitude Aerospace is an equal opportunity employer.
