Project Design Engineer

Memphis, TN

Overview

Ross Recruiting Services is partnering with a manufacturer in the power and energy sector to identify a Project Design Engineer for its Memphis-area operation.

This position plays a critical role in supporting large-scale transformer projects from initial design review through manufacturing, testing, installation, and customer handoff. The Project Design Engineer serves as the technical link between customers, engineering, manufacturing, project management, quality, and field service teams to ensure projects are delivered on time and meet customer requirements.

This opportunity is well suited for an engineer who enjoys technical problem solving, customer interaction, project ownership, and working on highly customized electrical equipment.


Key ResponsibilitiesProject Engineering & Technical Coordination
  • Review customer specifications and project requirements to ensure technical compliance throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Evaluate engineering designs, drawings, and technical documentation prior to manufacturing release.
  • Identify technical exceptions, clarifications, and potential design concerns early in the project process.
  • Support project execution from proposal stage through final project completion.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining quality and schedule commitments.
Customer & Cross-Functional Support
  • Serve as a primary technical contact for customers during design and execution phases.
  • Participate in customer meetings, design reviews, and technical discussions.
  • Coordinate closely with engineering, manufacturing, quality, project management, and field service teams.
  • Assist sales and commercial teams with technical support as needed.
  • Communicate project updates and resolve technical issues throughout the project lifecycle.
Design Review & Documentation
  • Review engineering documentation, approval drawings, bills of material, and project records.
  • Support preparation of customer submittal packages and project documentation.
  • Verify designs align with customer specifications, industry standards, and manufacturing capabilities.
  • Recommend improvements that enhance product quality, consistency, and overall project execution.
Testing, Manufacturing & Field Support
  • Review factory testing requirements and associated test documentation.
  • Support manufacturing teams during production and testing activities.
  • Assist with troubleshooting technical issues during manufacturing, installation, and commissioning.
  • Provide engineering support during startup and field service activities when required.
  • Travel to customer sites and supplier locations as needed to support project success.
Vendor & Equipment Support
  • Work with suppliers and vendors to address technical questions and component-related issues.
  • Assist in the selection and application of transformer accessories and related equipment.
  • Support resolution of technical challenges involving purchased components and systems.

QualificationsRequired
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or related technical discipline.
  • Minimum of 2 years of engineering, project engineering, project management, or related technical experience.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced project environment.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
Preferred
  • Experience with power transformers, electrical equipment, substations, utilities, or power distribution systems.
  • Manufacturing or industrial engineering experience.
  • Experience supporting customer-facing technical projects.
  • Exposure to factory testing, commissioning, startup, or field service activities.
  • Knowledge of electrical power systems and utility industry standards.
