What is a design system?

Design systems are comprehensive collections of guidelines, reusable components, and standards that help teams create consistent, cohesive, and efficient user interfaces across products. They typically include visual style guides, UI components, usage documentation, and coding resources to streamline design and development processes. By using a design system, organizations can ensure brand consistency, improve collaboration between designers and developers, and accelerate product development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a design systems specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Systems Specialist, you need expertise in UI/UX principles, front-end development, and a strong understanding of design patterns, usually supported by a background in design or computer science. Familiarity with tools like Figma, Sketch, Storybook, and version control systems is essential to build and maintain scalable design systems. Strong communication, collaboration, and attention to detail set outstanding professionals apart in this field. These skills and qualities ensure cohesive user experiences, efficient workflows, and consistent brand implementation across digital products.

How does a design systems role typically collaborate with cross-functional teams, and what challenges might arise?

Professionals working in Design Systems frequently collaborate with product managers, engineers, and UX/UI designers to ensure consistency and efficiency across digital products. A key challenge is balancing the need for standardization with the creative needs of individual teams, which often requires strong communication and negotiation skills. Regular meetings, documentation, and design reviews are common practices to foster alignment and address feedback. Navigating differing priorities and integrating updates into an established system are also typical hurdles, making adaptability and problem-solving essential in this role.

What is the difference between Design Systems vs UX Designer?

AspectDesign SystemsUX Designer
Primary FocusCreating and maintaining a cohesive set of design standards, components, and guidelines for productsResearching, designing, and improving user experiences through wireframes, prototypes, and user testing
Skills & CredentialsDesign principles, UI components, branding, collaboration skillsUser research, interaction design, visual design, usability testing
Work EnvironmentCollaborates with product teams, developers, and UI designersWorks closely with users, product managers, and developers
Industry UsageCommon in organizations with large product ecosystems and multiple teamsFound across tech, e-commerce, and service industries focusing on user experience

While Design Systems focus on establishing consistent design standards and reusable components, UX Designers concentrate on understanding user needs and crafting intuitive experiences. Both roles collaborate closely to ensure products are visually cohesive and user-friendly, but their core responsibilities differ significantly.

Job description

Job Title: Senior UI Engineer (React & Design Systems)
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced, results-driven Senior UI Engineer to join our established Agile Scrum team for a 6-month strategic engagement. In this role, you will contribute directly to our shared UI framework-the component, theming, state, and API-access layer powering our next-generation enterprise user interfaces deployed across edge/on-premises and cloud targets.
This is a hands-on, high-impact delivery role where you will work alongside permanent engineering staff to build, harden, and scale reusable design system components and complex feature surfaces. You will solve challenging front-end problems, including high-frequency data rendering, performance profiling, accessibility compliance, and cross-target correctness. If you possess deep expertise in modern React and TypeScript and a passion for crafting robust design systems, we want to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
Framework & Component Development
โ€ข Design Systems: Build, extend, and harden reusable React and TypeScript components within our design system, covering states, theming/tokens, keyboard interaction, and strict accessibility standards.
โ€ข Feature Surfaces: Implement assigned user interfaces and complex workflows against defined UX designs and REST/streaming APIs, managing robust data fetching, caching, and offline/degraded-connectivity states.
โ€ข Cross-Target Correctness: Ensure seamless UI execution across diverse target environments (edge/on-premises and cloud-hosted deployments), supported browsers, and screen sizes.
Quality, Testing & Performance
โ€ข Test Automation: Write and maintain comprehensive unit and component tests using Jest/Vitest and React Testing Library, contributing automated end-to-end coverage for all delivered flows.
โ€ข Performance Tuning: Diagnose and resolve front-end performance bottlenecks, including bundle size reduction, render cost profiling, large data-set rendering, and memory retention in long-running sessions.
โ€ข Defect Resolution: Take assigned defects from triage to verified fix, providing thorough root-cause documentation.
Collaboration & Handover
โ€ข Agile Delivery: Participate actively in all Agile ceremonies (backlog refinement, estimation, daily standups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives) within a 3-week sprint cycle.
โ€ข Documentation: Leave behind clean component documentation, usage examples, and architectural decision notes to ensure seamless ownership by the permanent team post-engagement.
Qualifications & Requirements
Minimum Qualifications
โ€ข Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent demonstrated professional experience).
โ€ข Experience Baseline: Minimum of 4+ years building production web front-ends.
โ€ข Technical Mastery:
oDeep, current expertise in TypeScript and React (hooks, component composition, state management, and rendering behavior).
oFluent modern HTML and CSS (responsive layouts, modern theming, CSS modules or CSS-in-JS).
oDemonstrated experience building or extending a reusable component library or design system consumed by multiple applications.
oStrong debugging and performance analysis skills using browser developer tools (profiling render cost, tracing network behavior, isolating memory growth).
โ€ข Core Competencies: Clear understanding of architecture boundaries (application code vs. UI framework vs. REST API); fluent in CI/CD workflows (small PRs, automated testing, code reviews); comfortable working across Windows and Linux development environments.
Preferred Attributes
โ€ข Experience implementing accessibility standards against WCAG 2.1 AA (ARIA patterns, keyboard-only navigation).
โ€ข Familiarity with back-end integration (Node.js/BFF or .NET/C#) to debug across the API boundary; Angular familiarity is a plus.
โ€ข Experience building UIs for real-time or high-frequency data streams (WebSockets/SSE, virtualized tables, time-series charting).
โ€ข Background in developing, testing, and publishing browser extensions (Chrome/Edge).
โ€ข Prior domain experience in industrial control, IoT, operational technology, or complex enterprise SaaS platforms.
