Summary
The Junior Interior Designer supports homebuyers throughout the interior selections process while contributing to the overall operations, presentation, and effectiveness of the design studio. This role blends foundational interior design expertise with consultative guidance, project coordination, and operational support.
Positioned between an Associate Designer and an Interior Designer, the Junior Designer exercises independent judgment in advising clients on design decisions, preparing and validating selection documentation, and ensuring alignment with builder standards, timelines, and product offerings. This role is primarily design-focused, with limited administrative responsibilities.
Essential Functions
Homebuyer Design Consultation
  • Conduct design consultations with homebuyers to understand lifestyle needs, design preferences, and budget goals.
  • Provide professional guidance on finishes, materials, color palettes, space planning, and overall design concepts.
  • Recommend products and upgrades that balance client vision, durability, and aesthetic value while adhering to builder specifications.
  • Prepare and present design proposals, visual boards, cost summaries, and required documentation with accuracy and clarity.
  • Educate clients on product performance, maintenance considerations, and pricing impacts to support informed decision-making.

Design Process Management
  • Manage the design portion of the homebuyer journey from initial meeting through final selections, coordinating with sales, construction, and internal teams.
  • Interpret builder programs, design guidelines, and community requirements; ensure accurate and timely submission of lot files and approvals.
  • Maintain expertise on current products, offerings, and trends through vendor training and ongoing research.
  • Support browse appointments, orientations, and educational sessions to enhance client understanding and create an exceptional experience.

Operational & Showroom Support
  • Assist with maintaining showroom standards, including updates to displays, sample management, and product transitions.
  • Prepare materials for design appointments while keeping the majority of the role focused on client consultation and design decisions.
  • Support vendor and internal partner communication related to product availability, updates, and presentation needs.

Design Studio Operations Support
  • Support design studio processes by managing reports and tracking information for assigned projects.
  • Answer phones, greet customers, and schedule or coordinate design center appointments.
  • Communicate regularly with builder personnel, designers, sales teams, and the manager; collaborate with designers and account executives to help manage builder accounts.
  • Prepare designer files and materials ahead of appointments.
  • Order office and design studio supplies, welcome visitors, and support maintenance of office equipment.

Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with sales, construction, and operations teams to ensure seamless handoffs and accurate documentation.
  • Serve as a knowledgeable resource on product options, builder requirements, and design processes.
  • Identify recurring issues or improvement opportunities and recommend enhancements to increase efficiency and client satisfaction.

Client Service & Issue Resolution
  • Assist in responding to client questions, clarifying product options, and addressing concerns, escalating issues as appropriate.
  • Contribute to client satisfaction by communicating clearly, demonstrating empathy, and applying design knowledge.

Performance & Compliance
  • Support achievement of design and sales metrics through effective consultative selling and relationship management.
  • Ensure accuracy and compliance in all documentation, pricing, approvals, and builder requirements.
  • Perform additional professional duties related to design studio operations and strategic initiatives as needed.

Education & Experience
Required
  • Bachelor's degree in Interior Design or a related field; or equivalent professional design experience.
  • 1-3 years of experience in residential design, design consulting, or a design studio/showroom environment.

Preferred
  • Interior Design certification or licensure where applicable.
  • Prior experience in homebuilding, construction, or residential product selection.

Skills & Competencies
  • Solid foundational knowledge of interior design principles, finish materials, and space planning.
  • Strong consultative communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Professional presentation abilities and comfort guiding clients through complex decisions.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; familiarity with design or project management software (AutoCAD, Revit, RFMS, etc.) is a plus.
  • Ability to interpret construction drawings, builder standards, and product specifications.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple demands in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving ability and capacity for independent judgment.
  • Collaborative, self-directed, and capable of influencing cross-functional teams.
