Associate Human Factors Engineer — Design Science (Philadelphia, PA)

Make healthcare safer. Make innovation usable. Make an impact.

Ready to launch your human factors career in a place where your work genuinely improves patients’ lives? Design Science, a BlueRidge Life Sciences company, is looking for an Associate Human Factors Engineer to join our Philadelphia team — a collaborative, mission‑driven group shaping how people interact with medical devices used around the world.

If you’re energized by research, fascinated by human behavior, and excited to work hands‑on with cutting‑edge medical technologies, this role gives you the exposure, mentorship, and growth path you’ve been looking for.

Why Design Science

We’re a human factors research firm with offices in Philadelphia, Evanston, and Munich, partnering with the world’s leading medical device and pharmaceutical companies. Our work directly influences safer, more intuitive therapies — and ultimately, better outcomes for patients.

At our Philadelphia HQ, you’ll find a tight‑knit culture, a vibrant city, and a team that values curiosity, integrity, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

What You’ll Do

As an Associate Human Factors Engineer, you’ll support research across a wide range of medical products and will:

  • Set up study environments and video equipment
  • Moderate usability testing sessions
  • Conduct field research and site visits
  • Perform root‑cause analysis
  • Run force, click‑sound, and needle‑action data collection systems
  • Process and analyzing raw data
  • Maintain and developing analysis tools (Python encouraged!)
  • Review and coding video
  • Manage data, backups, and study supplies
  • Write clear, compelling reports for clients

You’ll work in multi‑disciplinary teams — researchers, designers, engineers, videographers — all aligned around one goal: improving usability and safety in healthcare.

What You Bring

  • BS/BA in Human Factors, Biomedical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or related field
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills
  • Experience with Python or other coding languages
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • Familiarity with data collection platforms (OpenClinica, Qualtrics, etc.)
  • Excellent listening, observation, and writing skills
  • Willingness to travel 20–30% (domestic + international)
  • Strong organizational skills and comfort juggling multiple projects
  • Evidence of interdisciplinary collaboration

Bonus points for:

  • Experience with medical devices or product development
  • Knowledge of FDA human factors guidance
  • Interest in usability, ergonomics, or field research

What We Offer

  • Full-time, salaried position
  • Competitive compensation
  • Health, dental, vision, disability, life insurance
  • Paid Parental leave
  • 401(k) with match
  • A supportive, mission‑driven team
  • Opportunities for rapid professional growth
  • Flexible work environment
