Overall Scope: Assists with new product designs meeting OPW and industry standards. Designs new products with minimum supervision, recommends, and carries out the maintenance of significant changes. Is responsible for advancing composite product and process design to meet project goals or requirements of Commercial Industrial and Retail Fueling Fibrelite product lines.
Responsibilities:
• Assure that design and development tasks are carried out according to OPW Product Development process map.
• Identify cost savings projects and designs. Complete these projects from start to finish on time and within budget.
• Lead projects through a stage-gate process.
• Conduct research on alternative composite materials, resin, fabrics, and processing methods to optimize desired performance attributes for product and process design.
• Utilizes advanced composite analysis techniques and modeling to develop innovative product solutions to meet customer expectations.
• Must have strong attention to detail to complete designs, maintain document control processes, ECN releases and create BOMs & part number set up.
• Coordinate all phases of development, including creation, prototypes, testing, and analysis. Areas of design emphasis include Injection molding, rotational molding, multi-layer extrusion profiles, cast iron, stainless steel, and brass components.
• Conduct detailed element structural analysis of composite and metallic components and assemblies to verify product performance.
• Design molds to efficiently process raw composite materials to meet material, design, and manufacturing requirements.
• Ability to simultaneously work on multiple strategic projects
• Evaluate field and production issues, recommend improvements as necessary.
• Support Manufacturing, Purchasing, Quality Control, Sales, Marketing, Inventory Control, Production and Human Resources as needed
• Operate well in a team environment with other functional departments providing input and guidance in a timely manner
• Participate in cost reduction programs and coordinate cost reductions as necessary.
• Support manufacturing of composite products through sustainability and productivity projects.
• Encourage and foster an environment for new ideas and innovation.
• Other activities as needed.
Requirements:
Education
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Composite Engineering, Material Science, or 2-year associate's degree with equivalent design experience.
Experience
• Minimum 5 years work experience in Design Engineering (experienced in a fast-paced manufacturing environment preferred)
• Experience in composite design and manufacturing techniques for structural applications utilizing Lite Resin Transfer Molding, Resin Transfer Molding, Compression Molding, Injection Molding, Reaction Injection Molding Processes, and SMC
• 3D CAD experience with solid modeling, data management, and analysis software. (NX, ANSYS, Siemens TeamCenter, Oracle, preferred)
• Background in Engineering Change Notice (ECN) process and Product Development Process (PDP) is a plus.
• Experience with commercial and industry standards (ISO-9001, NFPA, UL, EPA, AASHTO, ASTM, ANSI, ASME, etc.)
• Demonstrates the ability to solicit the cooperation of others and positively influence the efforts and dynamics of work teams.
• Professional presentation skills, persuasive communication skills, adept listening, and highly developed interpersonal skills.
