Location: Evanston, IL
This position is designated as Hybrid โ€“ Fixed Days and will regularly work in the office an average of 3+ days a week โ€“ with a set schedule. Managers may require team members to work on the same schedule to encourage collaboration. Rotary is under the jurisdiction of Illinois employment laws; we require all employees to live within reasonable daily commuting distance to Evanston.

Position Overview
This position works with the editorial team at Rotary magazine, the official publication of Rotary International, to help oversee editing and production processes for its monthly print publication, website, and blog. Core responsibilities include copyediting, fact checking, and proofing. Additionally, the magazineโ€™s copy chief is responsible for developing, updating, and enforcing guidelines on standards and ethics in the magazineโ€™s reporting, editing, and design. You will participate in editorial planning meetings, generate story ideas, assign stories, manage the work of freelancers, and curate our style guides.
As a creative collaborator and innovative problem-solver with a superior sense of news judgment, the editor is responsible for the overall integrity and quality of our reporting, and ensuring the magazineโ€™s print and digital content has a consistent voice and fits together in a well-thought-out manner.
You will have
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in journalism or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of editorial experience with publishing and digital news outlets in the areas of general interest or humanitarian initiatives.
  • Detailed understanding of journalistic writing and editing.
  • Proven skills in developing print and digital content for magazines.
  • Proven organizational and leadership skills and ability to manage multiple deadlines simultaneously, and to identify and develop digital stories for a news magazine with a diverse audience.
  • Strong writing, editing, and project management skills.
  • Understanding of issues through a global perspective, and how to work in a complex global organization.
  • Fluent knowledge of current CMOS and AP style guides.

You will be responsible for
  • Copyediting all articles and other editorial elements for Rotary magazine, the Rotary Canada quarterly supplement, and the Rotary magazine website for clarity, accuracy, consistency, grammar, and style.
  • Collaborating closely with the magazineโ€™s fact-checker to guard the magazineโ€™s reputation as a publication of record for Rotary International.
  • Participating in weekly editorial planning meetings and partnering with magazine and web editors to brainstorm and research story ideas and plan issues.
  • Participating in editorial decision-making, especially regarding story direction, display copy, and covers.
  • Collaborating with writers, assigning editors, and art/design teams to resolve editorial issues.
  • Cultivating a strong knowledge of Rotary and familiarity with staff members in other departments.
  • Managing freelancers and assigning news and feature stories.
  • Developing guidance and staying up to date on standards for reporting and writing about sensitive topics such as race, gender, disability, and diversity to ensure that the magazine remains an authoritative voice on important topics.
  • Reviewing copy and layouts for legal and ethical concerns
