Join athenahealth as a Senior Software Engineer at the Senior Associate level, where you will design and build scalable, secure, and maintainable software that powersathenaCollectorโ€™srevenue cycle management features. This role is based in Boston, MA as a hybrid position. The engineer will collaborateacrossproduct, design, and operations teams to deliver high-quality services and will report to the Senior Manager.

Team Summary

InathenaCollector, we build technology solutions that automate Revenue Cycle Management (RCM). Our team focuses on implementing the essential medical back-office processes that automate and integrate the unique claims cycle requirements. By delivering scalable and reliable software, we help healthcare providers streamline billing and claims operations, improving financial outcomes and patient care.

On this team you will work on services and user experiences that directlyimpactclaims processing, billing, and client operations. You will help reduce manual work through automation, improve system observability and reliability, and deliver features that drive measurable business outcomes for provider clients. Collaboration with product managers, QA, SRE, and other engineering teams is central -youโ€™llparticipatein design discussions, code reviews, and delivery planning while mentoring more junior engineers and contributing to technical roadmaps.

Essential Job Responsibilities
  • Build software collaboratively on an Agile team of engineers, a scrum master, product owner, architect, and experience designer.

  • Own your work end to end and coordinate across teams to hit shared goals.

  • Build deep domain expertise in claims and RCM and share what you learn with engineering and product.

  • Work spec-first: turn clear specifications and acceptance criteria into well-tested, reviewable changes, and push for sharp requirements upstream so implementation, testing, and review are faster by design.

  • Use AI-assisted coding tools (code generation, review, test authoring) to ship faster - while owning the correctness, security, and maintainability of everything that lands.

  • Give and take fast, high-quality code reviews: let AI handle the mechanical parts so human attention goes to design, edge cases, and domain correctness.

  • Prototype LLM-assisted features and help define safe, usable ways to apply AI to developer productivity and client outcomes.

  • Contribute to agile ceremonies and the continuous improvement of how the team works.

Additional Job Responsibilities
  • Support integration and deployment activities using AWS EC2, Docker, and Kubernetes.

  • Assistin infrastructure automation efforts using Terraform or similar tools.

  • Explore and apply technologies such asGraphQLand Cadence to enhance product capabilities.

  • Contribute to testing strategies including unit and integration testing.

  • Participate in knowledge sharing and team learning initiatives.

  • Monitor application performance andassistin troubleshooting issues.

  • Stay informed about emerging technologies and industry trends relevant to healthcare software.

Expected Education & Experience
  • Bachelorโ€™s Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, ora relatedfield, or equivalent experience.

  • 4+ years of engineering experience in a product development organization.

  • Solid experience developing backend services in Java and Spring Boot.

  • Extensive experience with PostgreSQL, AWS EC2, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform,GraphQL, and Camunda or similar technologies is desirable.

  • Handsโ€‘on experience with ReactJS is a plus.

  • Experience working in Agile development environments.

Expected Compensation

$119,000 - $203,000

The base salary range shown reflects the full range for this role from minimum to maximum. At athenahealth, base pay depends on multiple factors, including jobโ€‘related experience, relevantknowledge and skills, how your qualifications compare to others in similar roles,and geographical market rates. Base pay is only one part of our competitive Total Rewards package - depending on role eligibility, we offer both short and longโ€‘term incentives by way of an annual discretionary bonus plan, variable compensation plan, and equity plans.
