What is design development?

Design development is a phase in the architectural and design process where initial concepts are refined into detailed plans and specifications. During this stage, designers work out the specifics of materials, dimensions, systems, and aesthetics, often collaborating with engineers and consultants. The goal is to translate ideas from the schematic design phase into precise documentation that can be used for construction. This stage helps ensure that the project is feasible, meets client needs, and complies with regulations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in design development?

To thrive in Design Development, you need a solid background in design principles, project management, and a relevant degree such as architecture, industrial design, or engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, 3D modeling tools, and design documentation systems is typically expected. Strong collaboration, problem-solving, and communication skills help you effectively translate concepts into practical solutions and work within multidisciplinary teams. These skills are crucial for delivering innovative, functional designs that meet client needs and project requirements.

What are some common challenges faced in a design development role and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Design Development often encounter challenges such as balancing creative vision with practical constraints like budget, timeline, and client requirements. Navigating feedback from multiple stakeholders and ensuring that design intent is maintained throughout the development process can also be demanding. These challenges can be addressed by fostering strong communication within cross-functional teams, maintaining detailed documentation, and using iterative design reviews to ensure alignment. By staying adaptable and solution-oriented, design development specialists can help bridge the gap between concept and execution.

Job description

The Design, Development, and Delivery (D3) Team within AWS Worldwide Field Enablement is seeking a talented UX Designer to join our creative production team. D3 provides shared development services including Creative Design, Interactive Media, Motion/Video Production, and Localization services to support and empower our AWS Sales Field. We deliver enablement content that allows our field sellers to speak confidently to customers and bring solutions forth with AWS technologies.
Using creative software and AI tools, you'll design solutions for interactive digital assets including eLearning, gamification experiences, video assets and enablement tools

You'll collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, Program Managers, Learning Designers, Motion/Video Designers, Interactive Media Developers, Localization and 3P Vendors to deliver engaging user experiences.
This is an opportunity to shape how our AWS sellers learn, engage, and perform by combining your design craft with the energy of a team that values creativity, collaboration and delivering bar-raising user experiences.
A day in the life
You may begin your day reviewing a script or storyboard for an interactive learning module, working with our Learning Design and Strategy team while recommending key interactions or ways to improve the experience.

You'll reference the AWS brand guidelines, design direction and/or systems to ensure visual consistency and compliance.
You may then join a team member to walk through a high-fidelity prototype, sharing ideas for a new user experience. You communicate design decisions clearly, discuss technical constraints and make informed trade-offs to meet delivery timelines.
Depending on your strengths, you may assist in the video production studios, editing footage, presenting ideas for social campaigns or directing an AI agent in building digital video assets

You'll use data to inform decisions and direction. You may identify ways to improve processes, write documentation or contribute to our team's library of assets intended to empower Builders across our organization.
About the team
D3 is a creative production team comprising of skilled professionals and strategic partners who are able to guide each project from strategy to concept to delivery.

Functioning as #oneteam, we avoid silos and nurture accountability by bringing together people, data, and ideas to build stronger solutions together. We value each others growth, creativity, and unique skillsets as a cohort of trusted collaborators. D3 balances innovation with time-to-deliver by prioritizing long term impacts through the application of AI-driven speed and thoughtfulness.
