Design Development information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Design Development, and why are they important?

To thrive in Design Development, you need a solid background in design principles, project management, and a relevant degree such as architecture, industrial design, or engineering. Familiarity with CAD software, 3D modeling tools, and design documentation systems is typically expected. Strong collaboration, problem-solving, and communication skills help you effectively translate concepts into practical solutions and work within multidisciplinary teams. These skills are crucial for delivering innovative, functional designs that meet client needs and project requirements.

What are some common challenges faced in a Design Development role and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Design Development often encounter challenges such as balancing creative vision with practical constraints like budget, timeline, and client requirements. Navigating feedback from multiple stakeholders and ensuring that design intent is maintained throughout the development process can also be demanding. These challenges can be addressed by fostering strong communication within cross-functional teams, maintaining detailed documentation, and using iterative design reviews to ensure alignment. By staying adaptable and solution-oriented, design development specialists can help bridge the gap between concept and execution.

What is design development?

Design development is a phase in the architectural and design process where initial concepts are refined into detailed plans and specifications. During this stage, designers work out the specifics of materials, dimensions, systems, and aesthetics, often collaborating with engineers and consultants. The goal is to translate ideas from the schematic design phase into precise documentation that can be used for construction. This stage helps ensure that the project is feasible, meets client needs, and complies with regulations.

What is the difference between Design Development vs Design Engineer?

AspectDesign DevelopmentDesign Engineer
CredentialsBachelor's degree in design, architecture, or related fieldBachelor's or master's in engineering, design, or related discipline
Work EnvironmentCollaborative teams, design studios, project sitesEngineering offices, manufacturing plants, project sites
Industry UsageArchitecture, product design, industrial designMechanical, civil, electrical engineering projects

Design Development focuses on refining and evolving design concepts, often involving creative and aesthetic decisions. Design Engineers apply engineering principles to develop functional, safe, and manufacturable products or systems. While both roles require technical knowledge, Design Development emphasizes creative design progression, whereas Design Engineers focus on technical feasibility and engineering solutions.

Your Opportunity: Taylor Print & Visual Impressions, a division of Taylor Corporation, is looking for a Design Engineer to come onboard in the Portland area! The Design Engineer supports the centralized R&D / Product Development group by engineering custom experiential, retail, and event display solutions. This role is responsible for translating conceptual designs into structurally sound and manufacturable builds across applications including retail casework displays, POP fixtures, branded environments, exhibit structures, and architectural signage.
This position works cross-functionally with Sales, Creative, Manufacturing, and Prototyping teams to develop innovative custom solutions that support revenue opportunities while ensuring feasibility, cost efficiency, and installation readiness.
Work Authorization: To be considered for the Taylor opportunities, candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without the need for employer sponsorship.
Your Responsibilities:
  • Engineer custom retail and experiential display structures
  • Design event and trade show environments, including booth frameworks and branded installations
  • Develop POP displays, corrugated structures, and retail merchandising builds
  • Engineer retail casework and fixture systems, including shelving, cabinetry, and branded display units
  • Support design of millwork-integrated retail environments and store fixtures
  • Create structural solutions for architectural signage and dimensional brand elements
  • Develop designs incorporating metal fabrication, tube structures, and extrusion frameworks
  • Produce fabrication-ready CAD models, shop drawings, and assembly documentation
  • Evaluate materials, including wood, laminates, metals, composites, and hybrid substrates
  • Design for manufacturability across CNC routing, metal fabrication, and finishing processes
  • Collaborate with Corrugate and Prototype Engineers on integrated builds
  • Support prototype development, testing, and installation validation
  • Ensure designs align with manufacturing capabilities across production sites
  • Provide technical support for sales-driven custom opportunities

You Must Have:
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design Engineering, or related field
  • 2+ years of experience in structural design, display engineering, or fixture design
  • Proficiency in CAD software (SolidWorks strongly preferred)
  • Experience designing retail fixtures, casework, or experiential displays
  • Understanding of fabrication methods, including metal, extrusion, and rigid substrates
  • Knowledge of manufacturing tolerances and assembly methods

We Would Prefer:
  • Experience in trade show, event marketing, or retail display industries
  • Familiarity with retail casework, millwork, or store fixture systems
  • Knowledge of sheet metal design, tube bending, or welded structures
  • Experience integrating lighting, graphics, and branded elements into fixtures
  • Familiarity with CNC routing, laser cutting, or metal fabrication workflows
  • Exposure to architectural signage or dimensional branding elements

Core Competencies:
  • Structural problem solving
  • Fixture & casework engineering
  • Metal fabrication design integration
  • Design for manufacturability
  • Creative-to-technical translation
  • Cross-functional collaboration

Role Scope:
  • Works independently on assigned custom engineering projects
  • Executes fixture and structural display designs within established processes
  • Collaborates with manufacturing and prototyping teams
  • Supports but does not lead product platform development initiatives
