What does a design development manager do?

A Design Development Manager oversees the design process of a project from concept to completion, ensuring that the design meets client requirements, budgets, and timelines. They coordinate between architects, engineers, contractors, and clients to ensure design integrity and feasibility. Their responsibilities often include managing design teams, reviewing drawings and specifications, and resolving design-related issues. This role requires strong project management skills, creativity, and a deep understanding of design principles and construction processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a design development manager?

To thrive as a Design Development Manager, you need expertise in architectural or product design, project management, and a relevant degree (such as architecture, engineering, or industrial design). Familiarity with CAD software, BIM systems, and project management tools like AutoCAD, Revit, or Asana is typically required. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills set outstanding candidates apart in this role. These skills are vital for effectively leading design teams, ensuring project deliverables meet quality standards, and aligning creative solutions with business objectives.

How does a design development manager typically collaborate with other teams during a project?

A Design Development Manager frequently works cross-functionally, coordinating with architects, engineers, procurement, and construction teams to ensure that design intent is maintained throughout the project lifecycle. They facilitate communication between creative and technical stakeholders, translating design concepts into actionable plans while addressing technical constraints and client needs. Effective collaboration is key to resolving design challenges, staying on schedule, and delivering high-quality outcomes that align with project goals.

Is a design development manager a stressful job?

A design development manager often faces stress related to project deadlines, managing cross-functional teams, and ensuring design quality. The role requires strong organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple priorities, which can contribute to a high-stress environment, especially during critical project phases.

Job description

Kinetic Design + Development is looking for a Design Coordinator to join the Krew.

NOTE:  This position is available as a hybrid, remote or in office position depending on candidate location

If you’re a designer who thrives in both the creative and technical sides of the process, this role is for you.

As a Design Coordinator at Kinetic, you’ll help lead the design and development of corporate architectural projects from concept through completion. Working closely with Project Managers, Account Managers, and clients, you’ll bring ideas to life through innovative, functional, and visually engaging spaces. You’ll balance design vision with technical precision, translating client goals into buildable, code-compliant realities while mentoring others and keeping projects moving smoothly. This is a hands-on, collaborative role where creativity meets execution.

Who You Are

You’re a confident and detail-driven designer who loves the craft of architecture as much as the process of bringing people and ideas together. You’re collaborative, adaptable, and proactive—equally comfortable mentoring teammates, running design charrettes, and rolling up your sleeves on production work. You communicate clearly, stay organized under pressure, and genuinely enjoy problem-solving. Your creativity is balanced by a deep technical understanding of how things get built, and you’re motivated by the opportunity to deliver work that inspires both clients and colleagues.

What You’ll Do

  • Lead the design and production of corporate architectural projects from schematic design through construction documents
  • Collaborate with Account Managers, Project Managers, and consultants to ensure seamless coordination across disciplines
  • Execute and review full drawing sets, details, and technical documentation for complex, large-scale projects
  • Prepare and present schematic and design development-level client presentations
  • Conduct field measurements and create existing conditions documentation to Kinetic standards
  • Mentor and support junior production staff in their design and documentation efforts
  • Ensure quality control and code compliance at each project stage
  • Participate in design charrettes, research design solutions, and explore innovative systems or code interpretations
  • Manage BIM models and team collaboration within Revit
  • Attend client meetings, take detailed notes, and help shape design decisions based on client goals and project requirements
  • Stay informed on building codes, zoning, and sustainability practices to ensure projects meet all requirements

Tools You’ll Use

Revit, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Lumion, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign), and rendering software

What You’ll Bring

  • Degree from a NAAB-accredited architecture program or accredited interior design program
  • Typically 6+ years of relevant experience in architectural design and documentation
  • Advanced knowledge of Revit, AutoCAD, Bluebeam, and rendering software
  • Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop and other Creative Suite applications
  • Strong understanding of building systems, codes, materials, and construction methods
  • Experience producing detailed construction drawings, building sections, and custom details for large, complex projects
  • Proven ability to manage BIM workflows and coordinate across teams
  • Excellent communication, organization, and time management skills
  • A passion for design excellence, creative problem-solving, and collaborative teamwork
