Design Development Manager information

What does a design development manager do?

A Design Development Manager oversees the design process of a project from concept to completion, ensuring that the design meets client requirements, budgets, and timelines. They coordinate between architects, engineers, contractors, and clients to ensure design integrity and feasibility. Their responsibilities often include managing design teams, reviewing drawings and specifications, and resolving design-related issues. This role requires strong project management skills, creativity, and a deep understanding of design principles and construction processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a design development manager?

To thrive as a Design Development Manager, you need expertise in architectural or product design, project management, and a relevant degree (such as architecture, engineering, or industrial design). Familiarity with CAD software, BIM systems, and project management tools like AutoCAD, Revit, or Asana is typically required. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills set outstanding candidates apart in this role. These skills are vital for effectively leading design teams, ensuring project deliverables meet quality standards, and aligning creative solutions with business objectives.

How does a design development manager typically collaborate with other teams during a project?

A Design Development Manager frequently works cross-functionally, coordinating with architects, engineers, procurement, and construction teams to ensure that design intent is maintained throughout the project lifecycle. They facilitate communication between creative and technical stakeholders, translating design concepts into actionable plans while addressing technical constraints and client needs. Effective collaboration is key to resolving design challenges, staying on schedule, and delivering high-quality outcomes that align with project goals.

Is a design development manager a stressful job?

A design development manager often faces stress related to project deadlines, managing cross-functional teams, and ensuring design quality. The role requires strong organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple priorities, which can contribute to a high-stress environment, especially during critical project phases.

The Mechanical Design Engineer designs and modifies stainless steel products to meet customer specifications, using SolidWorks and other 3D CAD tools. This role focuses on customizing existing product lines and supporting new product development by translating customer requirements into detailed mechanical designs, coordinating with production and assembly teams, and ensuring designs align with manufacturing processes, timelines, and cost targets.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and modify mechanical designs for existing and new products based on customer specifications using SolidWorks and other 3D CAD software.
  • Create detailed 3D models and drawings for components and assemblies, including stainless steel and sheet metal parts.
  • Design systems and manage project scopes, including timelines, cost considerations, and implementation for both new development and product modifications.
  • Support custom engineering projects from concept through production, including design, production support, assembly coordination, and testing activities.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing teams to ensure designs are compatible with GMP manufacturing processes for metal products, including stainless steel and sheet metal fabrication.
  • Prepare and maintain Bills of Materials (BOM) and labor allocations within MRP or ERP systems to support accurate planning and production.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including engineering, production, and sales, to ensure that customer requirements are fully understood and met.
  • Incorporate knowledge of sheet metal, welding, and finishing processes into designs to improve manufacturability and product quality.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by refining existing designs to enhance performance, reliability, and ease of manufacture.
  • Assist with design-related problem solving during production and assembly, providing engineering support to resolve issues efficiently.
  • Contribute to product development activities within the engineering design group, particularly for appliances and equipment used in food service and material handling applications.
Essential Skills
  • At least 1 year of experience with 3D modeling using CAD tools such as SolidWorks, Inventor, Pro/E, or Creo, including co-op or internship experience.
  • Proficiency in mechanical design and 3D modeling for metal products, particularly stainless steel and sheet metal components.
  • Ability to design systems and manage project scopes, including timelines, cost, support, and implementation for new development and product modifications.
  • Experience supporting custom engineering, including design, production, assembly, and testing of mechanical products.
  • Familiarity with GMP manufacturing processes for metal products, stainless steel, and sheet metal.
  • Experience creating and maintaining Bills of Materials (BOM) and labor allocations within an MRP or ERP system.
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes, including sheet metal fabrication, welding, and finishing.
  • Strong skills in mechanical design engineering within a production and manufacturing environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in CAD, Design, or Engineering is preferred but not required.
  • Experience with appliances or equipment that contain gas, electric, or refrigeration systems is a plus.
  • Background in designing products for food service, material handling, or similar industrial applications is beneficial.
  • Ability to work effectively within a large, team-oriented engineering design group.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills to work with engineering, production, and sales teams.
Work Environment

This role is based at a large manufacturing facility that produces stainless steel products for the food service industry, material handling, and supermarkets. The plant manufactures a wide range of products such as lunchroom tables, grills, fryers, ovens, refrigerators, and shelving for restaurants, with complete assembly of products performed on site. The location also serves as the headquarters, housing functions such as human resources, sales, accounting, and executive leadership. The Mechanical Design Engineer will work within the Engineering Design Group, which consists of approximately 25 team members, including those focused on sales order engineering and product development.
