Job description

Based out of the Electrical Division Edmonton (EDE) location, the Journeyman Machinist will report to the Manufacturing Supervisor of the Fabrication department. The Journeyman Machinist will setup and operate a variety of machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments.

Essential Responsibilities

   Study sample parts, blueprints, drawings, and engineering information to determine methods and sequences of operations needed to fabricate products.
   Calculate dimensions and tolerances using knowledge of mathematics and instruments such as micrometers and vernier calipers.
   Machine parts to specifications using machine tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, or grinders.
   Perform precision machine operations using basic and specialized tools.
   Responsible for inventory of tools, placing orders and ensuring work area has sufficient stock to perform duties.
   Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories and materials onto machines.
   Measure, examine and test completed units to detect defects and ensure conformance to specifications.
   Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process.
   Diagnose machine malfunctions and determine need for adjustments or repairs.
   Responsible for ensuring quality as well as performing checks on machined pieces to ensure they are properly lubricated and cooled.
   Clean and maintain machines, tools and equipment to ensure proper operation.
   Establish work procedures for fabricating new structural products.
   Evaluate experimental procedures and recommend changes or modifications for improved efficiency.
   Test experimental models under simulated operating conditions for such purposes as development, standardization, and feasibility of design.
   Assist Lead Hands with training and mentoring other employees.
   Promote a safety culture as well as attend all safety meetings.
   Ensure quality by following standard work/process instructions and identifying any potential risks to product quality.
   Ensure that work areas remain clean and well organized.

Qualifications

   Minimum education level of a High School diploma is required.
   Valid Journeyman Machinist Ticket or Red Seal certification.
   Minimum of 4 years of experience, working as Journeyman in fabrication.
   Familiarity with MES (Manufacturing and Execution System).
   Safety certifications are an asset for the position.
   Experience with machining different materials such as stainless steel and copper.
   Due to the safety sensitive nature of this position successful candidates will undergo pre-employment substance abuse and medical testing upon hire.
 

Working Conditions

  • Safety sensitive position in a temperature controlled manufacturing or industrial environment with occasional outside activities.
  • Required to wear personnel protective equipment at all times (i.e., safety glasses, and hearing protection) when required.
  • Working around loud machinery.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to maintain body equilibrium and agility to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching, ascending or descending stairs.
  • Bending the body at the waist, the legs at the knees, and extending arms and hands in any direction in a repetitive manner continuously.
  • Continuous standing, walking 50-300 foot distances for long periods of time with only occasional sitting.
  • Must be able to climb stairs frequently throughout the shift.
  • Able to frequently look over shoulders, work with both arms above shoulders and use both arms at full length frequently.
  • Using upper extremities to apply or exert a force continuously up to 50lbs.
  • Ability to use hand tools such as tin snips, hammer, and power tools (some vibrating), for long periods of time with frequent repetition.
