The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF), Project Delivery Bridge Section, is looking for an Engineering Assistant 1/2/3 Flex (Drafting / Geo-Spatial Engineer Assistant) to help us Keep Alaska Moving. Base Salary Information: Engineering Assistant 1: $35.45 / hourly (OT Eligible) Engineering Assistant 2: $40.86 / hourly (OT Eligible) Engineering Assistant 3: $46.71 / hourly (OT Eligible) What you will be doing: The Bridge Drafting and Geo-Spatial Engineering Assistant plays a hands-on role in the drafting of bridge design projects and processing of information collected during bridge inspections. You'll be involved in a variety of exciting tasks, from preparing construction plan sheets to conducting bridge inspections to assisting with the collection and processing of bridge management data

Under the guidance of licensed engineers, you'll prepare preliminary bridge layouts and detailed final plans using Auto CAD. You'll also assist with drone and sonar data collection efforts. The working environment you can expect: This position is located located within DOT&PF Headquarters in Juneau, at the DOT&PF 3-mile building on Channel Drive

The office work environment is "casual-professional", team-oriented, and friendly. Bridge inspection assignments can involve travel to all regions of Alaska. We can reach most of our bridges via major airlines and driving, but smaller aircraft, including float planes, are required to reach our remote bridge sites.

Juneau is in a temperate rain forest with steep-sided mountains, glaciers, and deep fjords within its boundaries. Outdoor recreational opportunities are abundant, and Juneau is famous for its spectacular scenery (even on the rainy days). Hiking, trail running, skiing, and cycling are popular pastimes.

Who we are looking for: To be successful in this position, the selected candidate will possess the following core-competencies: Design: Knowledge of conceptualizing, developing, producing, understanding, and using plans, models, blueprints, and maps, including the use of tools and instruments to produce precision technical drawings, working prototypes, components, or systems. Structural Engineering: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods related to the design and analysis of complex structures using a variety of materials. Structures may include aerospace systems or structures, and other determinate or indeterminate systems.

Analysis and Assessment: Uses information technology in accessing, collecting, analyzing, maintaining, and disseminating data and information. Civil Engineering: Knowledge of the concepts, principles, theories, and methods required to plan, design, construct, operate, and maintain facilities such as buildings, transportation systems, water and sanitary systems, and other public works systems. Database Management Systems: Knowledge of the uses of database management systems and software to control the organization, storage, retrieval, security, and integrity of data.

Special Note: This position requires field work that includes traversing uneven terrain and ascending/descending bridge embankments and riverbanks. It is preferred that the selected applicant possess a Valid Driver's license, but it is not essential to the position. Or: A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from a postsecondary institution not accredited by ABET. AND An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination. Special Note: An applicant who will obtain within nine months a bachelor's degree from an institution accredited by ABET, with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying, will qualify to apply.

An applicant qualifying under this option may receive a job offer conditional upon completion of the degree requirement within nine months, and may begin work AFTER obtaining and showing proof of the required degree. Engineering-In-Training or Flex Engineering Assistant 1/Engineering Assistant 2 positions will be identified by the employing department. ENGINEERING ASSISTANT 2 Bachelor's degree, or the equivalent with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET.

AND One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere. Or: A bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution not accredited by ABET. AND An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.

AND One year of entry level engineering, architectural or land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere. Or: Five years of progressively responsible subprofessional engineering experience of which two years was as a Journey level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 with the State of Alaska, or the equivalent elsewhere. Substitution: Graduate study in engineering and/or architecture may be substituted for the required experience as an Engineering Assistant 1.

(2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month of experience). Special Note: The employing department will identify Engineering-In-Training (EIT) positions. Transcripts which indicate the credit hours earned for the specific coursework may be requested at the time of interview or prior.

ENGINEERING ASSISTANT 3 Bachelor's degree with a major in engineering, architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET. AND Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or: A bachelor's degree with a major in a branch of engineering from an institution not accredited by ABET. AND An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination. AND Two years of engineering, architectural or land surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate trainee level.

The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere. Substitutions: Four years of any combination of ABET accredited postsecondary education in engineering, architecture, or land surveying (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) and/or engineering, architectural or land surveying experience may substitute for the required degree. Graduate study in engineering or architecture may be substituted for the required experience (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one month).

FLEXIBLY STAFFED This position is flexibly staffed. It may be filled at the Engineering Assistant 1, Engineering Assistant 2, or Engineering Assistant 3 level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above.

Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at a lower level, promotion to the higher level will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
