Design And Development Engineer information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Design and Development Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design and Development Engineer, you need strong analytical skills, a background in engineering (such as a bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, or related disciplines), and proficiency in product design principles. Familiarity with CAD software (like SolidWorks or AutoCAD), project management tools, and relevant industry certifications (such as Six Sigma or PMP) is typically required. Creativity, problem-solving, and effective teamwork are critical soft skills that set top professionals apart in this role. These skills ensure the successful design, prototyping, and launch of innovative products that meet both technical and market demands.

How does a Design and Development Engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a product lifecycle?

Design and Development Engineers work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including manufacturing, quality assurance, and marketing, throughout a product’s lifecycle. They are often responsible for translating design concepts into prototypes, gathering feedback from stakeholders, and incorporating changes to ensure the final product meets both technical and customer requirements. Regular meetings, design reviews, and collaborative problem-solving sessions are common, making strong communication skills essential for success in this role.

What are Design and Development Engineers?

Design and Development Engineers are professionals who create, test, and refine products or systems, often working in fields like manufacturing, electronics, or automotive engineering. They use technical knowledge and creativity to design new products or improve existing ones, ensuring they are functional, cost-effective, and meet safety standards. Their roles often involve collaborating with other engineers, using computer-aided design (CAD) software, and overseeing the development process from concept to production. These engineers play a crucial role in turning ideas into real-world solutions.

What is the difference between Design And Development Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectDesign And Development EngineerMechanical Engineer
Primary FocusDesigning and developing new products or systemsApplying principles of mechanics to analyze, design, and improve mechanical systems
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Mechanical, Industrial, or related engineering; often includes CAD certificationsBachelor's in Mechanical Engineering; licensure may be preferred
Work EnvironmentDesign labs, R&D departments, manufacturing settingsManufacturing plants, testing labs, design offices
Industry UsageProduct development, automotive, aerospace, consumer electronicsManufacturing, automotive, aerospace, energy sectors

The main difference is that Design And Development Engineers focus on creating and refining new products and systems, while Mechanical Engineers apply mechanical principles to analyze and improve existing mechanical systems. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and often work in overlapping industries, but their core responsibilities differ in scope and focus.

We pride ourselves on innovation, quality, and delivering tailored solutions to meet our clients' unique needs.

Position Overview: We are seeking a Senior Product Design Engineer to play a critical role in Value Analysis / Value Engineering (VAVE) initiatives within our OEM equipment manufacturing division. This role is responsible for leading daytoday design projects focused on improving product value, optimizing performance, and reducing cost-while ensuring designs are robust, manufacturable, and productionready.

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and project teams to evaluate performancecritical components, develop and maintain standard design procedures (SOPs), and implement scalable design solutions that support manufacturing throughput and longterm product strategy.

Key Responsibilities:

What you will do:

This role focuses on delivering highquality designs for production while improving product architecture and design standards to support scalable manufacturing.

How you will do it:

  • Utilize PTC Creo 9 to create and release accurate 3D models, drawings, and documentation packages in compliance with internal design standards and change control processes.
  • Perform engineering analyses, trade studies, and risk reviews to justify design decisions and ensure technical and functional requirements are met.
  • Partner with manufacturing engineering, quality, and operations to improve manufacturability, reduce variation, and support production ramp priorities through practical Design for Manufacturing (DFM).
  • Communicate technical decisions clearly to both technical and nontechnical stakeholders, including internal teams and external suppliers as required.
  • Design and draft mechanical parts, subassemblies, general assemblies, plumbing layouts, and sheetmetal assemblies.
  • Collaborate with engineering and production teams to optimize product designs for cost, quality, and schedule.
  • Develop and implement engineering changes and resolve design issues that arise during the product lifecycle.
  • Conduct independent technical investigations and troubleshooting with engineering, manufacturing, and vendors.
  • Generate and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) for assigned projects.
  • Execute Engineering Change Requests (ECRs/ECOs) in accordance with established processes.
  • Perform periodic inspections on the production floor to ensure products are built to released specifications and design intent.

What we are looking for:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a Technical/Associate Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering with equivalent experience.
  • Seniorlevel product design experience delivering complex equipment designs and design improvements in a production environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently on complex technical problems and drive solutions across multiple stakeholders.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes and how design decisions impact cost, quality, and throughput.
  • Proficiency in PTC Creo 9, with working knowledge of Windchill PLM and SAP.
  • Ability to provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers and designers.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present and defend technical recommendations.
  • Working knowledge of industry standards, codes, and practices relevant to air handling and OEM equipment.
  • Experience in equipment design within a manufacturing environment.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office tools.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience improving or developing product architecture to support manufacturing scalability and consistent build packages.
  • Experience with formal peer review and structured engineering change control in a production environment.
  • Direct collaboration experience with manufacturing engineering, quality, suppliers, and crossfunctional program teams.
  • Familiarity with standards and regulations related to data center equipment.
