Job description

About Vantage Data Centers

Vantage Data Centers powers, cools, protects and connects the technology of the world's well-known hyperscalers, cloud providers and large enterprises. Developing and operating across North America, EMEA and Asia Pacific, Vantage has evolved data center design in innovative ways to deliver dramatic gains in reliability, efficiency and sustainability in flexible environments that can scale as quickly as the market demands.

Reliability Engineering
The Reliability Engineering Department is responsible for ensuring the operational health of critical systems and the implementation of Site Operations best practices. This includes evaluating the performance and reliability of critical infrastructure, maintaining operational availability through maintenance programs, and providing technical support to Site Operations teams. The department also collaborates closely with the Design Engineering team to provide feedback for future data center designs.

Position Overview

This role will be based near any of our North America office locations, following our flexible work policy (3 days in-office and 2 days flexible).

The Sr. Technical Project Manager, Site Deployment - Mechanical Design Assurance is responsible for providing operationally focused mechanical review and technical assurance for new data center builds, expansions, and major fit-out projects across the North America portfolio. This role represents Site Operations and Site Deployment during design development, page-turn reviews, submittal reviews, RFI responses, commissioning strategy alignment, and movement of design packages toward Issued for Construction drawings.
The position ensures that mechanical systems are designed and delivered in a manner that is operable, maintainable, safe, reliable, and aligned with long-term Mission Critical Operations requirements. Working closely with Design Engineering, Construction, Commissioning, Business Operations, and local Site Operations teams, this role brings operator perspective into design decisions before construction execution, procurement, and turnover activities create downstream operational risk.

Essential Job Functions

  • Serve as the primary Site Deployment representative for mechanical design assurance across assigned campuses, projects, and expansions.

  • Participate in design page-turn reviews and provide operator-focused comments from concept design through IFC drawing issuance.

  • Review mechanical design packages, narratives, specifications, sequences of operation, equipment schedules, and drawing sets for operability, maintainability, accessibility, and reliability.

  • Review mechanical submittals, equipment selections, vendor documentation, and proposed alternates to evaluate operational impact, maintenance requirements, and lifecycle risk.

  • Support responses to RFIs related to mechanical systems, equipment access, operating modes, redundancy, controls interfaces, maintenance clearances, and long-term serviceability.

  • Evaluate value engineering proposals and design changes to ensure critical operational requirements are not removed, reduced, or compromised without appropriate risk visibility.

  • Provide technical input for mechanical commissioning strategies, operational acceptance criteria, testing scripts, TAB requirements, integrated systems testing, and turnover readiness expectations.

  • Collaborate with Site Deployment TPMs and future MCO teams to ensure mechanical design intent is carried forward into construction, commissioning, training, CMMS population, and steady-state operations.

  • Capture lessons learned from active operating sites and deployment projects and feed them back into future mechanical design standards, templates, and review criteria.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Review mechanical design milestones including 30%, 60%, 90%, IFC, bulletin, and construction revision packages.

  • Assess chilled water plants, CRAH/CRAC systems, pumps, piping, valves, heat exchangers, cooling towers, dry coolers, economization systems, filtration, water treatment, controls, and associated support infrastructure.

  • Validate maintenance access, equipment clearances, rigging paths, valve accessibility, isolation strategy, redundancy philosophy, and operational workflows within mechanical spaces.

  • Track design review comments, assigned actions, and open mechanical issues through closure with Design Engineering, Construction, Commissioning, and Site Operations stakeholders.

  • Participate in recurring design coordination meetings, page turns, constructability reviews, operability reviews, and commissioning planning sessions.

  • Review MEP coordination impacts where mechanical systems interface with electrical, controls, fire protection, architectural, structural, and civil scopes.

  • Provide operator perspective on sequence of operations, controls strategy, sensor placement, alarm strategy, setpoints, trending capability, and emergency operating scenarios.

  • Review proposed equipment substitutions or manufacturer deviations for potential impacts to maintainability, spare parts, training, warranty, resilience, and operational standardization.

  • Support development of operational design standards, mechanical review checklists, lessons learned repositories, and acceptance criteria used by the Site Deployment organization.

  • Partner with local MCO leadership to ensure future operators understand mechanical design intent, operating limitations, maintenance requirements, and known risk items prior to turnover.

Job Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in data center operations, mechanical engineering, commissioning, critical facilities maintenance, construction QA/QC, or mission-critical infrastructure delivery.

  • Strong working knowledge of data center mechanical systems, including chilled water, airside cooling, pumping systems, mechanical controls, water treatment, and supporting utility systems.

  • Experience reviewing mechanical drawings, specifications, submittals, commissioning documents, sequence of operations, and technical vendor documentation.

  • Ability to identify operability, maintainability, reliability, safety, and lifecycle risks within mechanical design packages before construction execution.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly articulate operator concerns to Design Engineering, Construction, Commissioning, and Site Operations stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple concurrent projects, track comments and issues to closure, and support fixed project milestones.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and familiarity with project documentation, drawing management, and issue tracking workflows.

  • Ability to travel up to 20% within North America based on project and site needs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, Facilities Management, or related field; or equivalent mission-critical experience.

  • Professional experience in hyperscale data center design, operations, commissioning, or construction delivery.

  • Experience with BMS/EPMS coordination, mechanical commissioning, TAB review, integrated systems testing, or operational acceptance programs.

  • Knowledge of reliability-centered maintenance, critical spares strategy, and operational readiness requirements for large-scale data center deployments.

Physical Demands and Special Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to handle, or feel objects; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop or kneel; talk and hear. Additional Details

  • This position is eligible for company benefits including but not limited to medical, dental, and vision coverage, life and AD&D, short and long-term disability coverage, paid time off, employee assistance, participation in a 401k program that includes company match, and many other additional voluntary benefits.

  • Compensation for the role will depend on a number of factors, including your qualifications, skills, competencies, and experience and may fall outside of the range shown.
