What is a deployment manager?

A deployment manager oversees the release of updates to technical systems. Your job duties include developing release schedules, providing support during the technical release process, and ensuring that production systems are functional following a successful release. A career as a deployment manager requires you have some formal qualifications and education, typically a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a related field. To excel as a deployment manager, you should have strong communications, analytical, and organizational skills. Prior experience working with technical systems during an implementation phase will set you ahead of other candidates.

What does a deployment manager do?

A Deployment Manager is responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing the rollout of new software, systems, or updates within an organization. They ensure that deployments are executed smoothly, on schedule, and with minimal disruption to business operations. Their duties often include managing resources, communicating with stakeholders, troubleshooting issues during deployment, and ensuring compliance with company policies. Deployment Managers play a key role in bridging the gap between technical teams and business units to facilitate successful project delivery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a deployment manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Deployment Manager, you need strong project management skills, experience in software or systems deployment, and typically a relevant degree in IT or engineering. Familiarity with deployment tools such as Jenkins, Ansible, or Azure DevOps, and certifications like PMP or Agile/Scrum, are often required. Exceptional organizational skills, leadership, and effective communication are vital soft skills for coordinating teams and managing stakeholder expectations. These abilities ensure smooth, timely, and successful deployments that align with business goals and minimize operational disruptions.

What are some common challenges deployment managers face when coordinating large-scale software releases?

Deployment Managers often encounter challenges such as aligning cross-functional teams, managing tight release schedules, and ensuring minimal downtime during rollouts. Coordinating between development, QA, and operations requires strong communication skills and attention to detail to avoid missteps. Additionally, they must anticipate and troubleshoot unexpected issues quickly to maintain system stability and meet stakeholder expectations.

Job description

Position description: Technical Deployment Manager

Reporting to: Director of Deployment

Company Overview

Signal 1 helps health systems accelerate AI adoption with a category defining technology platform. Signal 1's first product, the AI Management System (AIMS), gives health system leaders visibility and control across their growing AI portfolios. AIMS offers comprehensive oversight of predictive and generative AI applications and introduces guardrails to mitigate downside risks. It sets the standard for Responsible AI in healthcare. Purpose-built for healthcare and informed by years of experience managing AI at scale in other industries, Signal 1 empowers healthcare organizations to translate innovation into real clinical, operational, and financial outcomes.
Signal 1 is a 30-person, well-funded and rapidly growing startup with strong product market fit and deployments at a growing number of top-20 US health systems.

Position Summary

As Technical Deployment Manager, you will independently lead the implementation of Signal1's AIMS platform at partner health systems from kickoff through go-live and steady-state handoff. You will run the project management backbone of each deployment: coordinating status updates, preparing and presenting steering committee (steerco) materials, ensuring stakeholders have proper access and a shared understanding of key deadlines, and problem-solving through the technical, organizational, and political barriers that come up along the way. You will work closely with Signal1's product, engineering, and Deployment/Partner Success teams, and with technical, clinical, and project leaders at our hospital partners.

This role suits someone who has already built their project management discipline elsewhere - whether through enterprise technology implementation or a formal PMO/transformation function - and is ready to take ownership of external, executive-facing delivery from day one, without needing a senior layer above them to run interference.

We prefer candidates based in Toronto for a hybrid work arrangement, but are open to candidates located elsewhere.

In this role, you will:

  • Own the project plan, timeline, and risk/issue log (RAID) for assigned AIMS implementations end-to-end, from initial scoping through go-live and evaluation
  • Coordinate regular status updates and run project cadence with both internal deployment teams and client stakeholders (IT, clinical informatics, governance/compliance leads)
  • Prepare and present steering committee materials to hospital executive sponsors (CIO/CAIO/CMIO-level audiences), independently and with confidence
  • Ensure proper data and system access is provisioned, and that all parties understand key deadlines and dependencies before they become critical-path issues
  • Design workflows in collaboration with clinical and technical stakeholders through workshops and observation and configure the AIMS platform to reflect each client's unique workflow
  • Identify project risks early, evaluate root causes, and problem-solve through technical and organizational barriers - escalating only what genuinely needs escalation
  • Set and communicate priorities clearly, and motivate project partners (internal and client-side) to hit key milestones
  • Convene, lead, or participate in project meetings involving client representatives, building rapid rapport across technical and clinical audiences
  • Systematically capture user pain points, workflow gaps, and unmet needs surfaced during configuration and training, and translate them into structured input for product and engineering
  • Design and deliver training for client teams so they can operate confidently in AIMS post-go-live, and provide ongoing support as usage matures
  • Drive adoption plans that move client teams from legacy processes to AIMS-based workflows, identifying resistance points and working through them with practical, solutions-oriented fixes
  • Establish and maintain strong client relationships, ensuring satisfaction at every stage of the project
  • Monitor and report on project status to senior leadership at both Signal1 and hospital partners, integrating feedback into product development and delivery quality
  • Follow the policies and procedures of Signal1's Quality Management System (QMS) and engage in continuous improvement of the QMS
  • Other duties as assigned, including potential travel to client sites

Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent deployments at once (typically 2-4 accounts in parallel), with strong judgment on prioritization and multi-threading
  • 5-8 years of project management experience, either in enterprise software implementation (healthcare IT, clinical systems, or regulated SaaS) or in a PMO/transformation function with a track record of delivering to external customers
  • Exceptionally organized - you default to structure (RAID logs, status frameworks, milestone tracking) without being told to, and make that structure look effortless to the people relying on it
  • Excellent communicator, especially in writing - able to turn a messy project status into a clear, confident steerco deck for an executive audience
  • Demonstrated ability to run executive-level status and steerco communications independently, not just internal team standups
  • Working technical fluency: comfortable in conversations about integrations, data flows, and governance/vetting workflows, without needing to write code
  • Experience managing multi-stakeholder, matrixed projects (client teams, internal engineering, client IT/clinical staff)
  • Proven ability to build rapid rapport with a diverse range of clinical and technical stakeholders
  • Comprehensive knowledge of project management concepts, tools, methodologies, and best practices; PMP, CSM, or equivalent certification preferred
  • Experience across the entire project lifecycle, from initial conceptual design through final implementation and close
  • Comfortable operating with a high degree of autonomy in a fast-scaling startup environment

Nice to have:

  • Background in a corporate PMO, consulting PMO, or transformation office, with direct external-client delivery exposure
  • Prior experience at a health system, EHR vendor, or healthcare AI/clinical software company
  • Exposure to AI governance, model risk, or clinical decision support deployments

Our Perks:

  • Competitive compensation and stock options
  • Peers from diverse cultural backgrounds and academic areas
  • Entrepreneurial, open-minded and energetic culture
  • Excellent health and extended health coverage
  • Four weeks of paid vacation
  • Building impactful AI products and services that will transform hospital care!
