About the Department of Medicine  

 The Department of Medicine is home to 20 categorical residents per year, which includes a Primary Care Track and a Distinctions Track in Care Transformation, plus 5 preliminary interns in Medicine. Dell Seton Medical Center (DSMC) is a 220-bed, safety net, Level 1 Trauma Center, and serves as the inpatient training facility for this program. In September 2021, Dell Med’s IM program deployed a resident staffed team to Ascension Seton Medical Center Austin (SMCA) Hospital. SMCA is a full-service hospital with 24/7 emergency care and comprehensive Level 1 Stroke Center. SMCA also has a Level IV Trama Center.

About the Division Chief of Gastroenterology Position

The Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin is seeking an exceptional board certified Division Chief of Gastroenterology at the Associate Professor rank or higher to join the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

The faculty will be responsible for the growth of a General Gastroenterology practice either at a site of our hospital partner, Ascension Seton, or at the future site of The University of Texas Medical Center.

Ascension Seton is the leading provider of healthcare services in Central Texas, serving an 11-county population of 2 million. The organization operates 5 major medical centers, 2 community hospitals, 3 rural hospitals, a mental health hospital, several rehab/medical centers for well patients, and 3 primary care clinics for the uninsured.

The position will comprise of inpatient gastroenterology consult service, outpatient clinics, and endoscopy. There are no scheduled outpatient clinics during inpatient weeks. The position includes protected time for academic activities and may include teaching residents. The hospital and clinics are located in Central Austin.

The Division Chief ad-interim for Gastroenterology and Hepatology serves as the strategic and operational leader of the division, overseeing its clinical, academic, and research missions. This role involves directing high-quality patient care, expanding specialized clinical programs, and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration.

The Chief is responsible for recruiting, mentoring, and retaining faculty and staff, while also promoting a culture of excellence and professional development. The Division Chief plays a pivotal role in mentoring, coaching and advising faculty members within the division, actively contributing to their individual and collective faculty development and professional growth. In addition, the Chief plays a key role in advancing Gastroenterology and Hepatology education through oversight of fellowship, residency and undergraduate medical education and training, and in supporting a robust research agenda. As a representative of the division, the Chief engages with institutional leadership and community partners to align the division’s goals with broader organizational and societal needs.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • MD degree with Board Certification in ABMS-Gastroenterology. 
  •  Candidates with training in advanced endoscopy are encouraged to apply.
  • Training and experience in quality improvement initiatives.
  •  Eligibility for appointment at the (Clinical) Associate Professor level.
