What are defense offsets?

Defense offsets are agreements made between a country purchasing military equipment (the buying country) and the selling country or company, requiring the seller to provide additional economic benefits. These benefits can include technology transfer, local production, investments, or other forms of industrial cooperation that support the buyer's economy. Offsets are often used to strengthen domestic industries, create jobs, and enhance technological capabilities. They are common in international defense contracts to balance the significant financial outlays with economic returns for the buyer's country.
