What is deep ocean engineering?

Deep ocean engineering is a specialized field that focuses on designing, building, and maintaining technology and infrastructure used in deep-sea environments. This includes underwater vehicles, subsea structures, and systems for exploration, research, resource extraction, and environmental monitoring in the deep ocean, often at depths exceeding 200 meters. Engineers in this field address challenges like high pressure, low temperatures, and limited accessibility, making it a highly technical and interdisciplinary area of engineering.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a deep ocean engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Deep Ocean Engineer, you need a solid background in marine engineering, oceanography, and mechanical or electrical engineering, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software, underwater robotics, sonar systems, and certifications in underwater operations or ROV piloting are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and adaptability to challenging environments help individuals excel in demanding offshore projects. These capabilities are crucial for designing, operating, and maintaining complex systems in harsh deep-sea conditions, ensuring both project success and safety.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in deep ocean engineering projects?

Professionals in deep ocean engineering often encounter challenges such as harsh and unpredictable underwater environments, which can complicate the deployment and maintenance of equipment. Working at significant depths also requires strict adherence to safety protocols and the use of specialized technology, such as remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) or submersibles. Additionally, close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams—including marine biologists, geologists, and software engineers—is essential to ensure project success and address technical issues quickly. These factors make adaptability, strong communication, and technical problem-solving critical skills in the field.

What is the difference between Deep Ocean Engineering vs Marine Engineer?

AspectDeep Ocean EngineeringMarine Engineer
CredentialsEngineering degree, specialized training in oceanic environmentsEngineering degree, maritime certifications often preferred
Work EnvironmentUnderwater, deep-sea, offshore platformsShips, vessels, shipyards, coastal facilities
Industry UsageOil & gas, subsea construction, researchShip design, maintenance, propulsion systems

Deep Ocean Engineers focus on designing and maintaining equipment and structures for deep-sea environments, often working offshore or underwater. Marine Engineers work primarily on ships and maritime vessels, handling propulsion, systems, and maintenance. While both roles require engineering credentials and involve maritime environments, Deep Ocean Engineering emphasizes underwater and offshore projects, whereas Marine Engineering centers on ship operations and design.

Job description

THE COMPANY

THE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Oversee the end-to-end management and design of execution processes for commercial and Federal agreements, from initial draft through to final signing.
  • Lead the negotiation and execution of a diverse portfolio of agreements, including subcontracting, teaming, consortium, and contract modifications with International, Commercial, and US Government clients.
  • Cultivate and manage Saildrone's strategic relationships with customer procurement authorities across all organizational levels, utilizing existing connections with stakeholders and contracting officers to aid the Sales team in capturing new opportunities.
  • Partner with the Proposals team to provide critical support in reviewing and structuring bids, solicitations, and formal proposals.
  • Collaborate closely with the VP of Business Development and Head of Legal to evaluate proposals and contracts for alignment with internal policies and applicable Federal Acquisition Regulations, while building out robust compliance initiatives for our expanding operations.
  • Facilitate cross-functional communication and alignment with Finance, Operations, Engineering, Program Managers, and Account Executives to deeply understand customer delivery models and ensure seamless handover of closed business for operational kickoff.
  • Administer official contracts databases, maintain accurate Federal registrations, and establish clear best practices for executing commercial activities via Saildrone's GSA schedule.
THE QUALIFICATIONS
Required skills and experience
  • 7-12+ years of hands-on experience in negotiating and executing contracts with and managing relationships with United States Government, Commercial and International customers.
