How much do deep ocean engineering jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 7, 2026, the average yearly pay for deep ocean engineering in Seattle, WA is $167,140.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $132,600.00 and $196,900.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in deep ocean engineering projects?

Professionals in deep ocean engineering often encounter challenges such as harsh and unpredictable underwater environments, which can complicate the deployment and maintenance of equipment. Working at significant depths also requires strict adherence to safety protocols and the use of specialized technology, such as remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) or submersibles. Additionally, close collaboration with multidisciplinary teams—including marine biologists, geologists, and software engineers—is essential to ensure project success and address technical issues quickly. These factors make adaptability, strong communication, and technical problem-solving critical skills in the field.

What is deep ocean engineering?

Deep ocean engineering is a specialized field that focuses on designing, building, and maintaining technology and infrastructure used in deep-sea environments. This includes underwater vehicles, subsea structures, and systems for exploration, research, resource extraction, and environmental monitoring in the deep ocean, often at depths exceeding 200 meters. Engineers in this field address challenges like high pressure, low temperatures, and limited accessibility, making it a highly technical and interdisciplinary area of engineering.

What is the difference between Deep Ocean Engineering vs Marine Engineer?

AspectDeep Ocean EngineeringMarine Engineer
CredentialsEngineering degree, specialized training in oceanic environmentsEngineering degree, maritime certifications often preferred
Work EnvironmentUnderwater, deep-sea, offshore platformsShips, vessels, shipyards, coastal facilities
Industry UsageOil & gas, subsea construction, researchShip design, maintenance, propulsion systems

Deep Ocean Engineers focus on designing and maintaining equipment and structures for deep-sea environments, often working offshore or underwater. Marine Engineers work primarily on ships and maritime vessels, handling propulsion, systems, and maintenance. While both roles require engineering credentials and involve maritime environments, Deep Ocean Engineering emphasizes underwater and offshore projects, whereas Marine Engineering centers on ship operations and design.

Are deep ocean engineers in demand?

Deep ocean engineers are in demand due to the need for expertise in underwater exploration, offshore oil and gas extraction, and renewable energy projects like offshore wind farms. The industry requires specialized skills in subsea systems, robotics, and certifications such as diving or remotely operated vehicle (ROV) training, making qualified professionals valuable in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a deep ocean engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Deep Ocean Engineer, you need a solid background in marine engineering, oceanography, and mechanical or electrical engineering, often supported by a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with CAD software, underwater robotics, sonar systems, and certifications in underwater operations or ROV piloting are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and adaptability to challenging environments help individuals excel in demanding offshore projects. These capabilities are crucial for designing, operating, and maintaining complex systems in harsh deep-sea conditions, ensuring both project success and safety.

Job description

About Endurance
Endurance is building the world's first modular subsea geothermal power plants, converting vast thermal resources under the ocean into gigawatts of baseload power. Backed by Founders Fund, Felicis, First Round Capital, and Point72 Ventures, our founding team includes veterans from SpaceX, Helion, Blue Origin, and Apple. We have completed multiple deep-ocean deployments to subsea volcanoes and are launching a long-term demonstration project this fall. By leveraging modular design, manufacturing scale, efficient drilling, and latent cooling on the seafloor, we are pioneering a new category of energy that outperforms traditional sources on environmental impact, deployment speed, and cost.
Endurance Energy needs high ownership, technically excellent engineers across all disciplines and levels. Please submit your resume if that sounds like you but there is not a job posting that fits.
Compensation, Benefits, & Perks
As a pre-revenue startup, Endurance Energy offers competitive base salaries and generous equity packages for full-time employees. If you're selected for consideration, a recruiter will be able to discuss in greater detail. Final base salary will be determined by an array of factors including internal equity, job-related knowledge, skills, and work experience.
A key aspect of our compensation philosophy is that value creation should be aligned with rewards. Right now this means equity is a significant portion of every full-time employee's compensation. As the company matures, there will be continued evolution and changes to the total rewards and total compensation package. What will always be true is that if we win, we win together. Equity is granted to every full-time employee as a meaningful piece of ownership. We believe the people building the company should share directly in the value they create.
In addition to a competitive base salary and equity, employees will receive all of our other great benefits and perks, including:
  • Benefits: Health, Dental, and Vision insurance coverage
  • Time Away: Flexible PTO including 12 paid company holidays
  • Global Fieldwork: Travel to fascinating deployment sites along oceanic ridges in locations like the Pacific Northwest, Hawaii, Iceland, Japan, New Zealand, and the Azores
  • Hands-on Experience: Participate in sea trials and deployment operations in partnership with leading oceanographic institutions
  • Cutting-edge Development: Work with technology that spans high-power electronics, marine systems, and clean energy
  • Impactful Work: Help solve one of the world's most pressing challenges
  • Dive Certification: Company-sponsored recreational dive certification
  • Other Perks: Access to the company boat, free meals and snacks, and the list goes on!

How We Work
We believe the people on our team should live their best lives while doing their best work and that these should complement each other. That's why we've built our team around in-person, in-office collaboration: we think working shoulder to shoulder accelerates trust, speed, and the kind of spontaneous problem-solving that's hard to replicate remotely, especially at our stage. We support families and the unpredictability that comes with them.
Our total rewards package is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
