Decryption information

What is a decryption?

A Decryption job involves the process of converting encrypted data back into its original, readable format using the appropriate decryption keys or algorithms. This role is commonly found in cybersecurity, forensic analysis, and IT security, where professionals work to recover encrypted information for legitimate purposes. Decryption specialists may also assist in data recovery, analyze security vulnerabilities, and ensure secure access for authorized users while preventing unauthorized access.

Is cryptography a good career?

Cryptography is a specialized field within cybersecurity that involves developing and analyzing encryption methods to protect data. It offers high demand for skilled professionals, competitive salaries, and opportunities in government, finance, and technology sectors. Success typically requires strong mathematical skills, knowledge of security protocols, and relevant certifications such as CISSP or GIAC.

What are some of the main challenges faced in decryption?

Professionals in Decryption frequently encounter the challenge of working with highly complex or advanced encryption algorithms that require significant technical expertise and creativity to solve. They may also need to handle time-sensitive situations where decrypted information is critical to business or security decisions. The work often demands ongoing learning to keep up with evolving encryption standards and regular collaboration with cybersecurity teams to provide timely, accurate results. Despite these challenges, many find the work rewarding due to the impact it has on organizational security, investigative success, and personal growth in a rapidly advancing field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in decryption, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Decryption role, candidates need strong analytical and problem-solving skills, proficiency in cryptography, and typically a degree in computer science, cybersecurity, or a related field. Familiarity with decryption tools, cryptanalysis software, programming languages like Python or C++, and relevant certifications such as CISSP or CEH are often required. Attention to detail, persistence, and clear communication skills are important soft skills for collaborating with teams and interpreting complex data. These skills ensure security teams can effectively decode encrypted information, supporting organizational security or investigative needs.

Job Title

Staff Systems Engineer - Device Engineering - In-person Commerce

About your role:

Clover is a global leader in point-of-sale (POS) and financial technology, dedicated to building the smart terminal ecosystems that move money securely for millions of merchants daily. We are looking for a Senior Systems Engineer to serve as our resident Level 2 payment kernel expert at our Sunnyvale, CA campus, driving the engineering and global certification of our hardware products. In this role, you will lead the architecture, testing, and continuous operation of the secure payment kernel infrastructure that interfaces directly with lower-level device components, Android OS platforms, and international test networks.

What you'll do:
  • System Integration & Architecture: Design and implement robust solutions that bridge Android applications, inter-CPU communication frameworks, RTOS ecosystems, and core L2 payment kernels.
  • Feature Innovation: Develop and scale advanced features for our hardware fleet, including dynamic currency conversion, offline transaction capabilities, mobile wallets, and contactless payment networks (Apple Pay, Google Pay).
  • Kernel & Scheme Ownership: Take end-to-end technical ownership of Level 2 and Level 3 payment kernels across various international payment schemes.
  • Global Compliance & Testing: Partner closely with product management and global certification bodies to clarify specifications and guide devices through strict international test organization audits.
  • Triage & System Reliability: Investigate, debug, and resolve complex system integration issues, application bugs, and infrastructure bottlenecks across a diverse fleet of device types.
  • Production Support: Maintain terminal uptime and performance standards by participating in a regular, team-wide production support on-call rotation.
  • Responsibilities listed are not intended to be all-inclusive and may be modified as necessary.

Experience you'll need to have:

  • Core Experience: 7+ years of professional software delivery and systems engineering experience operating within Agile teams.
  • Payment Kernel Mastery: 3+ years of dedicated, hands-on experience building, configuring, or supporting EMV L2 and/or L3 payment kernels.
  • Android Platform Architecture: Proven track record with a heavy focus on the system architecture, design patterns, and internal frameworks of Android devices or platforms.
  • Language Proficiency: Strong command of at least two core AOSP programming languages (Java, C, C++, or Kotlin).
  • Mobile Development: Experience building native Android applications using Kotlin, with a focus on UI performance optimization and dynamic screen adaptation.
  • Tooling & Cryptography: Solid working knowledge of source control and peer review tools (Git, Gerrit), alongside a general understanding of payment security protocols (PKI, HSM, card encryption/decryption, and certificate management).
Experience that would be great to have:
  • Deep low-level programming experience, including embedded systems development, MCU/ARM Cortex environments, RTOS, and advanced C scripting.
  • Prior tenure in the payments industry, specifically working directly with EMVco standards or navigating PCI/PTS compliance landscapes.

How you'll work:

  • This role is on-site Monday through Friday. Fiserv considers in-person collaboration to be an essential part of this role as in-person office experiences help you with your overall onboarding experience and leads to stronger productivity.
  • This role requires use of a computer and audio equipment.

  • Paid holidays and generous time away policies
  • No-cost mental health support through Employee Assistance Programs
  • Living Proof program to recognize your peers' extra effort with points redeemable for rewards
  • Eight Employee Resource Groups to foster a collaborative culture and expand your network
  • Unparalleled professional growth with training, development, and internal mobility opportunities
  • Medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance options available from day one
