How much do deck jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 21, 2026, the average hourly pay for deck in the United States is $22.67, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $19.71 and $25.48 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working on a deck crew and how can they be addressed?

Deck crew members often encounter challenges such as exposure to harsh weather conditions, heavy lifting, and maintaining safety protocols while working with equipment and cargo. Effective communication and teamwork are essential to ensure tasks are completed efficiently and safely. Staying up-to-date with safety training and using proper protective gear can help mitigate risks, while developing strong collaboration skills ensures the deck crew operates smoothly during demanding situations.

What is the difference between Deck vs Carpenter?

AspectDeckCarpenter
CredentialsHigh school diploma or equivalent; some may have specialized training in deck constructionHigh school diploma or equivalent; apprenticeship or vocational training often required
Work EnvironmentOutdoor, construction sites, residential and commercial projectsIndoor and outdoor; residential, commercial, and industrial settings
Industry UsageSpecific to deck building and outdoor structuresBroader; includes framing, cabinetry, finishing, and various carpentry tasks

While a Deck specializes in constructing outdoor decks and similar structures, a Carpenter has a broader skill set that includes framing, finishing, and other woodwork. Decks are a niche within carpentry, so many carpenters build decks as part of their services. Understanding these differences helps clients find the right professional for outdoor deck projects or general carpentry needs.

How much do you earn as a deckhand?

The average deckhand salary ranges from $2,000 to $4,000 per month, depending on experience, location, and the type of vessel. Entry-level deckhands typically earn lower wages, while experienced crew members with certifications like STCW can earn higher pay and additional benefits such as overtime and tips.

What boat job pays the most?

The highest-paying boat jobs are typically offshore captain or engineer positions, which require extensive experience and certifications such as STCW. These roles often offer salaries exceeding $100,000 annually, especially on large commercial or luxury vessels. Specialized skills, leadership, and safety training contribute to higher compensation in these roles.

What are deck jobs?

Deck jobs involve constructing, repairing, or maintaining decks, often on residential or commercial buildings. Workers typically need skills in carpentry, knowledge of safety protocols, and may require certifications such as OSHA training. These jobs are usually performed outdoors and can be seasonal or year-round depending on the location.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Deck Officer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Deck Officer, you need a solid understanding of navigation, maritime safety, and ship operations, typically supported by a relevant maritime degree and certification such as an STCW license. Familiarity with navigation systems, radar, ECDIS, and other bridge equipment is essential. Strong leadership, decision-making, and effective communication are vital soft skills for ensuring safe and efficient vessel operations. These skills and qualities are crucial for maintaining safety at sea, complying with regulations, and leading crew members in dynamic and challenging maritime environments.

Is it hard to get a job as a deckhand?

Getting a job as a deckhand can be competitive and often requires physical fitness, maritime safety training, and sometimes prior experience or certifications such as STCW. Entry-level positions are available, but candidates with relevant skills and a willingness to work in outdoor, physically demanding environments tend to have better prospects.

Job Title: Deck Supervisor
Reports to: Assistant Manager - Aquatics
FLSA Status: Part time, Non-Exempt
Summary: We're looking for a confident, organized, and coaching-minded leader to join our team as a Deck Supervisor. This is a shift leadership role at its core - you'll oversee the flow of lessons, lead and develop your deck team, and make sure every student and family has a golden experience every single visit. If you're someone who thrives in a fast-moving environment, takes ownership seriously, communicates with clarity, and gets energy from helping others grow, this role is built for you.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Own the shift from start to finish - prepare the deck, lead pre-shift and post-shift meetings, and keep lessons running on time and on brand.
  • Coach Swim Instructors, Deck Assistants, and Lifeguards through direct observation and honest, specific feedback that drives real improvement.
  • Interact with parents and guardians at the end of every lesson to discuss student progress and act as a GSS ambassador who ensures member satisfaction.
  • Complete daily Deck Supervisor logs and monitor student attendance on assigned shifts.
  • Conduct periodic evaluations of Swim Instructors and provide actionable feedback.
  • Coordinate facility cleanliness tasks and ensure the pool environment meets our standards throughout the shift.
  • Help arrange coverage for absent team members to keep shifts running smoothly.
  • Step in as a substitute Swim Instructor or Lifeguard when needed.
  • Identify areas for improvement and help implement corrective action through training.

What We're Looking For:
  • Current Lifeguard, CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications required and must remain active.
  • Background in youth sports coaching, camp leadership, or teaching is a plus.
  • A natural coach who gives feedback early, often, and with intention.
  • Calm under pressure and able to make decisions quickly when it matters.
  • Must be available for evening and weekend shifts.
  • While performing this job, the employee is regularly exposed to heat, humidity, and chlorine. Noise level is usually moderate.

What Success Looks Like:
  • Every shift runs smoothly because preparation happened before the first student arrived.
  • Your deck team feels supported, coached, and clear on expectations before every lesson.
  • Families trust us because the experience is consistent and communication is proactive.
  • Students are progressing because instructors are delivering quality lessons under your guidance.

Compensation: $17.00 - $20.00 per hour
