What is decision analysis?

Decision analysis is a systematic, quantitative, and visual approach to making complex business or policy decisions. It involves structuring decision problems, identifying alternatives, assessing risks and uncertainties, and evaluating outcomes based on preferences or objectives. Decision analysis uses tools like decision trees, probability models, and cost-benefit analysis to help decision-makers choose the best course of action. This method is widely used in fields such as business, healthcare, engineering, and government for risk management and strategy development.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in decision analysis, and why are they important?

To thrive in Decision Analysis, you need strong analytical thinking, quantitative modeling skills, and a relevant degree in fields like statistics, mathematics, economics, or engineering. Proficiency with data analysis tools such as Excel, R, Python, and specialized decision analysis software like @RISK or TreeAge is often required. Exceptional problem-solving, communication, and collaborative skills help professionals convey insights and support stakeholders in making informed choices. These abilities are critical because effective decision analysis drives better outcomes by systematically evaluating options and reducing uncertainty for organizations.

What are common challenges faced by professionals in decision analysis, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Decision Analysis often encounter challenges such as dealing with incomplete or ambiguous data, balancing multiple stakeholder perspectives, and presenting complex findings in an accessible way to non-technical audiences. Overcoming these challenges typically involves strong analytical skills, effective communication, and the use of advanced modeling tools. Collaboration with cross-functional teams is also crucial for gathering diverse insights and ensuring that recommendations are actionable and aligned with organizational goals.

As a member of the Amgen team, youโ€™ll help make a lasting impact on the lives of patients as we research, manufacture, and deliver innovative medicines to help people live longer, fuller happier lives.

Our award-winning culture is collaborative, innovative, and science based. If you have a passion for challenges and the opportunities that lay within them, youโ€™ll thrive as part of the Amgen team. Join us and transform the lives of patients while transforming your career.

SENIOR MANAGER, PORTFOLIO ANALYTICS & STRATEGY What you will do

Letโ€™s do this. Letโ€™s change the world. In this vital role you will lead portfolio analysis, performance tracking, and benchmarking, while owning Amgenโ€™s Probability of Technical and Regulatory Success (PTRS) process across the R&D portfolio.

You will serve as a strategic thought partner to Product Teams, Therapeutic Area and Portfolio Governance, translating development risks, evidence, and uncertainty into decision-ready options. You will also oversee technology initiatives that enable PTRS and broader portfolio decision support, working closely with the Technology, Research, and Development organizations, Product Teams, and other cross-functional partners

Key Responsibilities PTRS assessment, strategy, governance, tools & technology
  • Lead and facilitate the enterprise PTRS assessment process with Product Teams and cross-functional experts at key development, investment, and governance milestones.
  • Own and continuously evolve the PTRS methodology, standards, benchmarks, guardrails, governance cadence, and documentation, including integration with portfolio and business-case processes.
  • Oversee development of new PTRS and riskโ€‘assessment tools with the Technology organization and functional experts, including data products, evidence workflows, dashboards, and decisionโ€‘support capabilities.
Product Team partnership & decision support
  • Partner with Product Teams to assess risk across alternative target product profiles, indication and population choices, biomarker strategies, and clinical development options.
  • Facilitate evidenceโ€‘based discussions that distinguish established evidence from key assumptions, clarify what would confirm, challenge, or disconfirm the current risk posture, and help teams articulate tradeโ€‘offs across risk, value, timing, cost, and resource demand.
Portfolio reviews, performance & benchmarking
  • Support portfolio reviews, prioritization, and investment decisions by assessing portfolioโ€‘level tradeโ€‘offs across risk, value, timing, cost, and resources and developing clear options for Governance and senior leaders.
  • Lead crossโ€‘functional portfolio performance tracking and industry benchmark participation across cycle times, success rates, portfolio composition, productivity, throughput, and other development KPIs to identify trends, gaps, and improvement opportunities.
Executive insights & calibration
  • Deliver decisionโ€‘ready insights on portfolio risk, value, performance, and key tradeโ€‘offs for Product Teams, Governance, and senior leadership. Maintain consistency across PTRS, valuation, planning, and governance assumptions, and use historical outcomes, internal performance trends, and external benchmarks to calibrate assessments and improve decision quality over time.
