How much do dealership mechanic jobs pay per hour?

As of Jul 6, 2026, the average hourly pay for dealership mechanic in the United States is $24.81, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $19.23 and $28.85 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Dealership Mechanic, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Dealership Mechanic, you need expertise in automotive diagnostics, repair, and maintenance, usually backed by a relevant technical certification or vocational training. Familiarity with manufacturer-specific diagnostic tools, computerized systems, and OEM repair procedures is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help mechanics excel when working with both customers and team members. These competencies ensure accurate repairs, customer satisfaction, and compliance with dealership and manufacturer standards.

Is 27 too old to become a mechanic?

Dealership mechanics can start at any age as long as they have the necessary skills, training, and certifications such as ASE certification. Age is not a barrier; many successful mechanics begin their careers later in life and benefit from hands-on experience and technical knowledge.

How much do car dealer technicians make?

Dealership mechanics typically earn an average annual salary ranging from $40,000 to $70,000, depending on experience, certifications, and location. Skilled technicians with ASE certifications and specialized tools can earn higher wages, especially in busy or high-end dealerships.

Can a mechanic make $200,000 a year?

Dealership mechanics can potentially earn $200,000 annually with extensive experience, specialized skills, certifications, and working in high-paying regions or overtime. However, such earnings are above the typical range for most dealership mechanics, whose average salaries are generally lower.

What Does a Dealership Mechanic Do?

As a dealership mechanic, your responsibilities center around the repair and maintenance of automobiles. Your duties include changing tires, replacing brakes, dealing with electrical issues, and more. As you service each vehicle, you troubleshoot possible problems based on what a customer tells you. Using various software and tools, you diagnose and solve the issue to ensure the car is ready for the road. The job is equal parts preventative maintenance and repairing worn-out parts on vehicles. Depending on the dealership, you might also speak with customers about the issues you find and how you plan to fix them.

How does a dealership mechanic typically collaborate with service advisors and parts departments during repairs?

Dealership mechanics work closely with service advisors and the parts department to ensure efficient vehicle repairs. Service advisors act as the communication link between customers and mechanics, providing detailed descriptions of issues and relaying updates. Mechanics often consult with the parts department to locate and order necessary replacement parts, minimizing downtime. This teamwork helps streamline workflows, reduce errors, and deliver high-quality service to customers. Collaboration and clear communication are key to meeting service deadlines and maintaining customer satisfaction.

What are dealership mechanics?

Dealership mechanics are automotive technicians who work at car dealerships, specializing in servicing, diagnosing, and repairing vehicles sold by that dealership's brand. They are often trained and certified by the manufacturer, giving them expertise in specific makes and models. Their work may include routine maintenance, warranty repairs, and addressing more complex technical issues. Dealership mechanics typically use specialized diagnostic equipment and have access to genuine parts supplied by the manufacturer.

What do I need to be a mechanic at a dealership?

To be a dealership mechanic, you typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, completion of an automotive service technician program, and relevant certifications such as ASE (Automotive Service Excellence). Experience with diagnostic tools, strong mechanical skills, and the ability to work in a team environment are also important.
