What is a dc power technician?

DC Power technicians are professionals who install, maintain, and repair direct current (DC) power systems, which are commonly used in telecommunications, data centers, and industrial facilities. Their responsibilities include testing batteries, troubleshooting power equipment, ensuring backup systems are operational, and following strict safety procedures. They play a critical role in ensuring uninterrupted power supply for essential electronic systems and infrastructure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a dc power technician?

To thrive as a DC Power Technician, you need a solid understanding of electrical theory, experience with DC power systems, and usually a technical diploma or equivalent field experience. Familiarity with power meters, battery testing equipment, and industry certifications such as OSHA or manufacturer-specific training is often required. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are essential soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure the safe, reliable installation and maintenance of DC power systems critical for telecommunications and other infrastructure.

What are some common challenges dc power technicians face when working on-site, and how can they be addressed?

DC Power Technicians often encounter challenges such as working in confined spaces, managing complex wiring systems, and adhering to strict safety protocols when servicing or installing power equipment. Effective communication with team members and thorough preparation, including reviewing site-specific diagrams and safety procedures, are crucial for minimizing risks. Additionally, staying updated on industry standards and regularly participating in hands-on training can help technicians troubleshoot issues efficiently and maintain high-quality work in dynamic environments.

Job description

Senior Power Electronics

Location: Ann Arbor, MI (On-site)
Type: Full-time

About Volt Harbor

Volt Harbor is a venture-backed deep tech startup based in Michigan.    We are building a universal hardware and storage platform for powering data centers from the grid with a considerable advantage in cost, performance, reliability, and time to delivery and deployment.

Why Join Us

At Volt Harbor, we’re building with urgency, ambition, and purpose. We’re a small team tackling a bold technical and environmental challenge: making energy delivery and storage radically better. Our culture is rooted in intellectual honesty, a deep respect for engineering rigor, and a shared drive to innovate.  You will work independently while collaborating with other members of our team.

We value agility over bureaucracy, learning over ego, and aiming high over playing it safe. Whether you’re troubleshooting hardware or shaping product direction, your work will directly shape the future of our technology and our impact. You’ll be working directly with a world-class founding team: our CEO holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering from MIT.

If you're excited by tough problems, fast cycles, and building something that matters that is a real commercial product broadly used in industry—we want you on the team.

The Role

Volt Harbor is looking for a Senior Power Electronics / Hardware Engineer to lead the development of our core power electronics and hardware platform. This is a hands-on, high-impact role where you’ll help design and build hardware that directly enables our energy systems—from concept to field deployment.

You’ll work closely with our engineering team to build, test, and scale the hardware that sits at the heart of our technology. The ideal candidate has a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience, has developed a product through its full lifecycle and has a strong foundation in power electronics, analog and digital hardware, and system-level integration—and thrives in an agile, fast-paced startup environment.

What You’ll Work On

In this role, you’ll take end-to-end ownership of the design, building, and validation of Volt Harbor’s hardware platform. Your work will span hardware design, control systems design and implementation, and system-level integration with embedded and battery systems. This is a hands-on engineering role with high autonomy and direct impact on our core technology.

We’re looking for someone who brings:

●      Deep experience with power converters (DC/DC, AC/DC, DC/AC) in the 1–20 kW range

●      Strong background in analog, digital, and mixed-signal circuit design

●      Proficiency in digital control, feedback loops, and real-time embedded implementation

●      Proficiency with simulation tools such as PLECS, SPICE, or MATLAB/Simulink

●      Expertise in PCB design, layout, and signal integrity

●      Working knowledge of C/C++ and/or Python for control and debugging

●      Experience with thermal management, EMI/EMC design, and safety-critical systems

●      Bonus: design of digital buses, experience with high voltage systems, experience with EV batteries, CAN bus communications

Compensation & Benefits

Salary range: $120,000 – $170,000 / year, based on qualifications.
Equity: Competitive stock option grant

●      Healthcare including medical, dental, and vision
●      Flexible vacation policy + 9 paid company holidays

Location & Work Setup

This role is based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. On-site presence is required. This role requires regular, hands-on use of lab equipment, oscilloscopes, power supplies, and physical PCB assembly/troubleshooting that cannot be performed remotely. On-site presence in Ann Arbor is therefore an essential function of this position, not a general preference.

Equal Opportunity and Additional Information

Volt Harbor is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, height, weight, marital status, disability, veteran status, or any other status protected by applicable federal, state, or local law, including the Michigan Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act.

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Volt Harbor does not sponsor employment visas for this role at this time.
