Job description
Position Overview:
The Quality Manager of the Parts Distribution Center is responsible for leading the quality function within a large, high-volume parts and supplies distribution center. This role owns the systems, processes, metrics, and corrective actions that ensure inbound receipts, inventory handling, order fulfillment, packing, shipping, returns, and customer shipments are completed accurately, safely, and consistently. The Quality Manager partners closely with distribution operations, inventory control, transportation, customer service, procurement, suppliers, and supply chain leadership to reduce errors, prevent defects, improve process discipline, and strengthen the customer experience in a fast-paced, high-SKU environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead the quality function for a large parts and supplies distribution center, establishing quality standards, procedures, audit routines, and controls across inbound, outbound, replenishment, returns, and inventory movement processes.
- Develop and maintain quality management systems, standard work, inspection processes, defect tracking, and corrective action processes that support accurate and reliable order fulfillment.
- Monitor quality performance across key distribution metrics, including order accuracy, pick/pack accuracy, shipping accuracy, receiving accuracy, damage rates, returns, inventory discrepancies, customer claims, and process compliance.
- Lead root cause analysis and corrective action efforts for quality issues such as mis-picks, incorrect shipments, damaged product, packaging failures, receiving errors, inventory mismatches, labeling issues, and customer-impacting defects.
- Partner with distribution operations leaders and front-line supervisors to identify process gaps, reinforce standard work, improve team execution, and reduce variation across shifts and functional areas.
- Collaborate with inventory control, transportation, procurement, customer service, suppliers, and supply chain partners to resolve quality concerns and prevent recurring issues across the end-to-end distribution process.
- Establish inspection, containment, rework, disposition, and return-to-stock processes for damaged, defective, mislabeled, or nonconforming parts and supplies.
- Use WMS, ERP, reporting tools, dashboards, and quality data to identify trends, prioritize improvement opportunities, and communicate performance to distribution center and supply chain leadership.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives focused on reducing defects, improving fulfillment accuracy, strengthening packaging quality, improving dock and warehouse processes, and enhancing customer service levels.
- Support new product introductions, SKU transitions, vendor changes, packaging changes, and operational start-up or ramp-up activities by ensuring quality requirements and controls are clearly defined and executed.
- Maintain audit readiness and compliance with internal controls, safety requirements, operating procedures, customer requirements, and applicable distribution quality standards.
- Lead, coach, and develop quality team members; set expectations, provide technical guidance, build capability, and foster a culture of accountability, accuracy, safety, customer focus, and continuous improvement.
- Prepare and present quality performance updates, trend analysis, corrective action plans, and improvement recommendations to operations and supply chain leadership.
Experience and Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain, Logistics, Operations Management, Quality, Engineering, Business, or a related field; equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- 8+ years of experience in quality, distribution, warehouse operations, logistics, supply chain, manufacturing, or a related operational environment.
- Prior leadership experience managing quality teams, quality technicians, auditors, analysts, or related operational support teams.
- Strong knowledge of distribution center quality processes, including receiving inspection, order accuracy, pick/pack verification, shipping accuracy, returns, damage reduction, packaging quality, and process audits.
- Experience in a high-volume, high-SKU distribution center or warehouse environment, preferably supporting parts, supplies, aftermarket parts, industrial products, or service components.
- Proven ability to lead root cause analysis, corrective actions, containment, process improvement, and standard work implementation.
- Strong analytical skills with experience using quality metrics, operational data, dashboards, and reporting tools to identify trends and drive performance improvement.
- Experience with WMS, ERP, and quality reporting systems; SAP, EWM, TM, or similar platforms preferred.
- Familiarity with Lean, Six Sigma, 5S, continuous improvement, process control, and audit methodologies preferred.
- Strong communication, leadership, influencing, problem-solving, decision-making, and follow-through skills.
- Ability to partner effectively with operations, inventory control, transportation, customer service, procurement, suppliers, and senior leadership in a fast-paced distribution environment.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to work in an on-site distribution center environment, including standing, walking, bending, and moving throughout warehouse, dock, receiving, shipping, returns, and inventory areas.
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds and inspect products, packaging, pallets, racks, workstations, and process areas as needed.
- Ability to use a computer, WMS/ERP systems, reporting tools, and standard office equipment for extended periods.
- May require use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and work around powered industrial equipment in designated distribution center areas.
- Ability to support quality investigations, audits, inspections, and operational issue resolution across multiple areas of the distribution center.
Preferred:
- Experience in HVAC, aftermarket parts, service parts, industrial supplies, or other high-SKU parts distribution environments.
- Experience building or scaling a quality function in a large distribution center, start-up operation, network transition, or WMS-enabled environment.
- Lean, Six Sigma, quality auditor, or similar continuous improvement certification preferred.
- Experience using quality data to reduce customer claims, improve order accuracy, reduce damages, and strengthen fulfillment reliability.
