What is a dbt developer?

A Dbt Developer is a data professional who specializes in using dbt (data build tool) to transform raw data into clean, reliable datasets for analytics and business intelligence. They write modular SQL code to perform data transformations, manage data models, and ensure data quality within modern data warehouses. Dbt Developers collaborate closely with data engineers, analysts, and business users to create efficient, maintainable data workflows. Their work enables organizations to make informed decisions based on trustworthy and well-structured data.

How does a dbt developer typically collaborate with data engineers and analysts on a project?

DBT Developers frequently work alongside data engineers to ensure that data pipelines provide clean, reliable data to downstream users. They collaborate with analysts to understand data requirements, define business logic, and implement transformations that support analytics and reporting. Regular communication is essential for aligning on naming conventions, documenting models, and troubleshooting issues. This collaboration often takes place through code reviews, shared documentation, and agile ceremonies such as sprint planning or stand-ups.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a dbt developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DBT Developer, you need strong SQL expertise, data modeling skills, and experience with ETL processes, typically supported by a background in computer science or data engineering. Familiarity with DBT (Data Build Tool), version control systems like Git, and cloud data warehouses such as Snowflake or BigQuery is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help you deliver scalable data solutions and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These skills are crucial for building reliable data pipelines, ensuring data quality, and enabling data-driven decision-making within organizations.

What is the difference between Dbt Developer vs Data Engineer?

Job description

Description:

Engineering

The DevOps Engineer at Hyper Solutions plays a critical role in the cloud infrastructure, release, and reliability practices that support Hyper’s products. This position is responsible for designing and operating the AWS infrastructure the platform runs on, the release pipeline, the incident response process, and the on-call rotation. The role reports to the VP of Software Engineering.

This role operates at the intersection of infrastructure engineering, operational process design, and engineering governance.

The DevOps Engineer partners closely with Engineering, Security, and Quality leadership to define how the organization detects, routes, and responds to operational problems and owns the written policies that govern that work. Those policies are version-controlled documents that change by pull request and are reviewed like code.

This position is well-suited for a systems-oriented engineer who is comfortable owning both the infrastructure and the operational practices that govern it, and who treats written process as leverage rather than overhead.

Core Responsibilities

  • Design and operate the on-call rotation, including its structure, rostering, escalation model, and supporting tooling.
  • Own the incident response process, including triage, severity assignment, escalation paths, and post-incident review requirements.
  • Own the release pipeline that moves code from merge to production, including rollback procedures.
  • Architect, operate, and evolve Hyper’s AWS cloud infrastructure and the Terraform that describes it.
  • Shape how AWS environments are structured, isolated, and governed as the product portfolio expands, including account strategy, preventive controls, and identity.
  • Author and maintain operational policy covering on-call, incident response, and release management as version-controlled documents subject to review.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Extend infrastructure-as-code and continuous delivery practices so that infrastructure changes are reviewed, repeatable, and auditable by default.
  • Strengthen how operational problems are detected, routed, and responded to, and evaluate what tooling investment is warranted as the team grows.
  • Partner with product engineering teams so that new workloads, including a new IoT analytics platform, land natively within the cloud architecture rather than being retrofitted into it later.
  • Partner with Security and Quality leadership on architecture and operational standards.
  • Review infrastructure and pipeline changes contributed by other engineers.
  • Maintain operational documentation including runbooks, escalation paths, and architecture decisions.
Requirements:

  • 5+ years of experience in DevOps, site reliability, platform, or infrastructure engineering roles.
  • Production experience with Terraform at a scale requiring deliberate decisions about state layout and blast radius.
  • Depth in AWS, particularly IAM, and including Organizations, service control policies, VPC design, ECS, and RDS.
  • Experience building and operating CI/CD pipelines with GitHub Actions and OIDC federation.
  • Experience owning an incident end to end, including setting severity under pressure with incomplete information.
  • Demonstrated ability to write operational policy and defend it in a documented review process.
  • Working hours with substantial overlap with a US business-hours coverage window.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with observability and secrets management tooling such as Datadog and Doppler.
  • Experience with timeseries or IoT data platforms.
  • Analytics engineering experience with dbt or an equivalent tool.
  • AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional, or AWS Certified Solutions Architect at either Associate or Professional level.

What This Role Is Not

These boundaries are stated here rather than discovered after hire.

  • Not a 24/7 pager. On-call coverage is scoped to business hours rather than round-the-clock. Any change to that model originates from this role.
  • Not the release decision. This role owns the pipeline and makes it trustworthy enough to bet on. Whether a given release ships on a given day is decided elsewhere.
  • Not the permanent first responder. On-call is a shared rotation across Engineering. This role defines how triage, severity, and escalation work rather than absorbing the queue.
  • Not security or quality ownership. Both have dedicated leads. This role partners with them closely, particularly on architecture.

What Success Looks Like

  • Incidents are detected, routed, and resolved through a process that holds up under pressure.
  • Releases reach production predictably and roll back cleanly when they need to.
  • Infrastructure changes are reviewed, repeatable, and auditable by default.
  • AWS environments are structured and governed to absorb portfolio growth without retrofitting.
  • New workloads, including IoT analytics, land natively within the platform architecture.
  • Operational policy is current, accurate, and trusted by the engineering organization.

Why Hyper?

At Hyper Solutions, you’ll have the opportunity to directly shape the infrastructure, release practices, and operational standards behind products serving the mission-critical data center industry. This role offers meaningful ownership across both technical systems and the engineering practices that support them.

You’ll work closely with Engineering, Security, and Quality leadership while helping build scalable cloud infrastructure and operational processes that can grow with Hyper’s product portfolio. For an engineer who enjoys solving complex infrastructure problems, creating durable systems, and improving how teams operate, this role offers the opportunity to make a visible impact.

Location

Onsite in Richmond, VA preferred.

Compensation

The anticipated compensation range for this role will be provided based on the approved hiring range. Actual compensation may vary based on factors including, but not limited to, relevant experience, skills, certifications, and location. This position may be eligible for discretionary bonus or incentive compensation depending on applicable company programs and individual and organizational performance.

In addition to competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits including employer-paid medical, dental, and vision coverage, and a 401K with company match, Hyper offers growth opportunities and the ability to make an impact on the organization.
