Dbt Data Engineer information

What is a dbt data engineer?

Dbt Data Engineers are professionals who specialize in using dbt (data build tool) to transform, test, and document data within modern data warehouses. They build and maintain data pipelines by writing SQL-based transformation scripts and ensuring data quality through automated testing. Dbt Data Engineers collaborate closely with analytics teams to create reliable, well-documented datasets that support business intelligence and analytics initiatives.

How does a dbt data engineer typically collaborate with data analysts and other stakeholders?

As a Dbt Data Engineer, you'll work closely with data analysts, business intelligence teams, and sometimes product managers to translate business requirements into reliable, well-structured data models. Collaboration often involves reviewing transformation logic, ensuring data quality, and providing documentation or training on Dbt models. You may also participate in regular stand-ups or data modeling sessions to align on priorities and address data challenges collaboratively. Effective communication skills are key, as you'll bridge the gap between raw data and actionable insights.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a dbt data engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Dbt Data Engineer, you need strong SQL skills, experience in data modeling, and a solid understanding of ELT/ETL pipelines, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with dbt (data build tool), version control systems like Git, and cloud data platforms such as Snowflake or BigQuery is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective collaboration are essential soft skills for this role. These skills ensure robust, scalable, and maintainable data transformations that drive reliable analytics and business insights.

What is the difference between Dbt Data Engineer vs Data Analyst?

AspectDbt Data EngineerData Analyst
Primary FocusBuilding and maintaining data transformation pipelines using dbtAnalyzing data to generate reports and insights
Skills & ToolsSQL, dbt, ETL pipelines, cloud platformsSQL, Excel, BI tools, data visualization
Work EnvironmentData engineering teams, cloud data platformsBusiness units, reporting teams
CertificationsSQL, cloud certifications, dbt trainingData analysis, visualization certifications

While both roles work with data and SQL, Dbt Data Engineers focus on developing scalable data transformation pipelines using dbt, whereas Data Analysts primarily analyze data to produce reports and insights. The roles complement each other within data teams but differ in technical scope and responsibilities.

Key responsibilities

  • Design, build, and optimize scalable data pipelines, models, and warehouse architecture across Snowflake, dbt, Fivetran, and related technologies.

  • Serve as a senior technical anchor for Axon's Corporate Data Platform, setting quality standards for engineering output, data modeling, testing, observability, and production readiness.

  • Partner with stakeholders to influence architectural decisions and deliver reliable, governed, and AI‑ready data infrastructure.

Job description

At Axon, we’re on a mission to Protect Life. We’re explorers, pursuing society’s most critical safety and justice issues with our ecosystem of devices and cloud software. Like our products, we work better together. We connect with candor and care, seeking out diverse perspectives from our customers, communities and each other.

Life at Axon is fast-paced, challenging and meaningful. Here, you’ll take ownership and drive real change. Constantly grow as you work hard for a mission that matters at a company where you matter.

Your Impact

We are seeking a Senior Data Engineer II to play a pivotal role in building and advancing Axon’s Corporate Data Platform — a best-in-class, cloud-native data warehouse that serves as the foundation for enterprise reporting, business self‑service analytics, and our growing Connected Intelligence initiatives. In this hands‑on senior individual‑contributor role, you will design, implement, and optimize modern data solutions across Snowflake, dbt, Fivetran, Elementary, Sigma, and the broader data engineering ecosystem. You’ll serve as a technical anchor for the team, helping shape platform architecture, raise engineering standards, and build trusted, AI‑ready data infrastructure that drives business decisions across Axon. This role offers significant influence, visibility, and career growth for a senior engineer who wants to deepen their technical leadership while helping define what modern data engineering looks like at scale.

What You’ll Do

Location: This role follows a hybrid schedule and is based out of one of our U.S. office hubs. We rely on in‑person collaboration and ask that team members work onsite Tuesdays through Fridays, with the flexibility to work remotely on Mondays, unless there is an approved workplace accommodation.

Reports to: Director, Enterprise Data. Direct Reports: None — this is an individual contributor role.

  • Serve as a senior technical anchor for Axon’s Corporate Data Platform, setting a high quality bar for engineering output, data modeling, testing, observability, and production readiness.
  • Design, build, and optimize scalable data pipelines, models, and warehouse architecture across Snowflake, dbt, Fivetran, and related modern data platform technologies.
  • Partner closely with the Principal Data Engineer, team lead, and cross‑functional stakeholders to influence architectural decisions and deliver reliable, governed, and AI‑ready data infrastructure.
  • Build and maintain clean, well‑modeled datasets that power enterprise reporting, business self‑service analytics, and AI‑driven work‑streams across Finance, Sales, Operations, and other business functions.
  • Contribute to Axon’s formal data governance framework, including data quality SLAs, audit‑scoped monitoring across Bronze, Silver, and Gold data layers, and SOX‑relevant compliance controls.
  • Implement and uphold automated testing, monitoring, and data quality standards using tools such as dbt and Elementary, ensuring the platform meets internal and external audit integrity requirements.
  • Mentor junior and mid‑level engineers through thorough code reviews, pairing on complex problems, technical guidance, and proactive knowledge sharing.
  • Establish and evolve engineering best practices, including dbt conventions, data modeling patterns, testing standards, CI/CD workflows, and documentation practices.
  • Evaluate and introduce new tools, patterns, and platform capabilities that help Axon stay ahead of growing enterprise data and AI needs.
  • Drive measurable impact through improvements in platform reliability, pipeline SLA adherence, data quality test pass rates, engineering quality, governance maturity, and team capability.
What You Bring
  • 10+ years of experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, software engineering, or modern data platform development, with a track record of delivering production‑ready data pipelines, models, and warehouse solutions.
  • Hands‑on expertise with Snowflake, dbt, Fivetran, and modern ELT/data warehouse architecture; experience with Elementary, Sigma, CI/CD pipelines, cloud infrastructure, or AI/ML‑adjacent data tooling is a strong plus.
  • Proficiency leveraging AI‑powered engineering tools such as Cursor and Claude Code as part of day‑to‑day development workflows; using AI tooling to improve engineering quality, speed, documentation, testing, and problem‑solving is an expectation for this role, not a nice‑to‑have.
  • Strong data modeling, SQL, testing, observability, and performance optimization skills, with a commitment to building reliable, governed, and maintainable data systems.
  • Experience supporting data governance, data quality frameworks, auditability, compliance controls, or SOX‑relevant environments.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate as a senior individual contributor — owning complex technical problems, influencing architecture, raising code quality, and delivering high‑impact work without close direction.
  • A passion for mentorship and team elevation, including code reviews, pairing, knowledge sharing, and helping establish practical engineering standards.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to partner effectively with technical teams and business stakeholders across Finance, Sales, Operations, and other functions.
  • A values‑driven approach aligned with Axon’s mission and culture: you take ownership, solve hard problems, act with integrity, and care deeply about building systems that help the business move faster and smarter.
Benefits that Benefit You

  • Discretionary paid time off
  • Paid parental leave for all
  • Fitness Programs
  • Emotional & Mental Wellness support
  • Employee Resource Groups, or ERGs
